NEW RADIO RELAY FACILITY CONSTRUCTION, NORTH KOREA
ABSTRACT
1. This report contains information about the construction of six new radio relay stations in
North Korea.
This report includes a location map, three photographs, and a table.
INTRODUCTION
2. North Korea has begun a program of new radio relay facility construction which will
provide an improved capability over that of the existing parabolic dish antenna network. Construc-
tion activity was initially observed in November 1975 with concomitant identification of R-600
Vesna horn antennas. None of these new facilities are collocated with previously reported radio
relay stations.'
BASIC DESCRIPTION
3. Six new radio relay stations have been identified in various stages of construction in North
Korea (Figure 1 and inset table). The R-600 system with Vesna horn antennas has yet to be observ-
ed at two of these radio relay stations.

4. All six of these facilities are nearly identical in size and configuration. A self-supporting
lattice tower, a circular control building below the tower, and two support buildings adjacent to the
tower are features common to each of the stations.
5. Early-stage facility construction was seen at Pujon Radrel Station (Figure 2) where ex-
cavations for the tower foundations were around the circular control building.
6. At Hamhung Radrel Station (Figure 3), midstage construction was observed. At least three
mounting rings were on the self-supporting lattice tower, and four R-600 Vesna horn antennas were
lying on the ground adjacent to the tower. A circular probable control building was beneath the
tower.
7. In early May 1976, construction was nearly complete at Chongjin Radrel Station (Figure 4),
the only facility where R-600 Vesna horns have been observed mounted on the lattice tower. A cir-

PHOTOINTERPRETER'S COMMENTS
8. Although only six of these new radio relay stations have been identified in North Korea to
date, it is anticipated that more facilities of this type will be constructed throughout the country
and that they will be equipped with R-600 Vesna horn antennas. When completed, this new system
should significantly enhance North Korea's radio relay network.
