POSSIBLE DEFENSIVE STRONGPOINTS,
NAO CHOU TAO (ISLAND), CHINA
Photography of reveals three possible
defensive strongpoin s, eight concrete structures, and an
early warning radar facility on Nao Chou Tao (island)
(A, B, C, Figure 1). These defensive strongpoints are
similar in construction technique and appearance to the
suspect advanced weapons related facilities (SAWRFs) on
the mainland.
Each of these strongpoints consists of a mound of
earth approximately 10 meters (33 feet) in height, with
probable entrances at the base of the mound and an uniden-
tified object or structure 8 meters (26 feet) in diameter
on top of the mound. Each of the strongpoints is encircled
by a moat approximately 247 meters (810 feet) in diameter
and 10 meters (33 feet) in width (Figure 2).

dor system under construction at one of the str
(B) on The corridor is
in length on an east-west axis. Two
perpendicular arms extend from the central cor-
d or, one to the north and one to the south (Figure 3).
Initial scarring was observed at one of the other sites
(C).
In addition to the strongpoints, four large and two
small parallel earth-covered, probably concrete structures
are located at 20-54-30N 110-36-30E. The four larger
structures have large openings facing southeast toward the
coast and are located approximately 1,100 meters (3,609
feet) from the beach. Two long, narrow, parallel, concrete
structures are located in trench-like excavations at
20-54-50N 110-35-4oE. These structures are similar to
those located near Leipei (21-23N 110-12E) in South China.
The Nao Chou Tao Air Warning Radar Facility
is located at 20-54-30N 110-36-11E; how-
ever, ere does not appear to be any radar present. A
probable moat extends around approximately one-third of
the facility.
