INDIA India is continuing the expansion of its military facilities in West Bengal State, according to photography of Three of the nine facilities in the Baghdogra-Siliguri military complex (Figure 1) are currently being expanded. Construction has been recently reported at Binnaguri Station Military Area* and Hasimara Airfield.** The Baghdogra-Siliguri military complex is located in the strategic Siliguri Pass area of West Bengal State, the narrowest point between Nepal and East Pakistan and is also only 47 nautical miles southwest of the point at which the Chinese invaded Sikkim in 1962. The complex includes a major airfield, an ammunition storage area and seven barracks/ storage areas containing a total of 1,648 buildings (135 of which are under construction) and 426 tents. The complex has been slowly and continuously expanded since 1962 with construction concentrated in four new facilities north of Baghdogra Airfield. Construction at two of these facilities is shown in Figure 2. There has been no expansion of Baghdogra Airfield which presently contains a 2,499- x 43-meter (8,200 x 140 ft) concrete runway. The airfield is reportedly used by the Indian Air Force as a support base for airdropping supplies into the Northeast Frontier Agency. The road network in the Baghdogra-Siliguri area remains unchanged except for several new service roads within the military complex. A new rail spur is in early stages of construction east of the airfield. NPIC Project llll08NH *NPIC.
