Approved For Release 2001/08/07 : CIA-RDP78TO5166A000100010032-8 NEWLY IDENTIFIED OILFIELD CHIEN CHIANG, CHINA A producing oilfield is newly identified 70 nautical miles (run) west of Wuhan, China (Figure 1). This is the only known oilfield in southeast China. There is no refinery identifiable at this field, but refineries at Nanching and Shanghai are accessible by the Yangtze River. The oilfield is being developed over a total area of 150 square miles (sq mi) bounded approximately by coordi- nates 30-33N 112-34E, 30-33N 112-54E, 30-22N 112-54E, and 30-22N 112-34E (Figure 2). It is just east of Changhu (lake) on the Yangtze flood plain near where the river leaves the Wushan Mountains. Forty-two derricks and 46 completed wells and drill holes are observed in addition to ten vertical storage tanks and two open reservoirs. No crude oil processing facilities can be identified. However, a small heat- processing facility which may be a possible thermal power- plant is located 30-31-1ON 112-46-OOE near the center of the oilfield. This possible powerplant consists of one large gable-roofed building, two small gable-roofed structures, a single stack, and two operating spray ponds. Stepout or exploratory wells are observed 4 rim north- east, 7 rim southeast, 2 nun south, and 25 nm west of the boundaries of the oilfield. These wells indicate that the oil pool may be much larger than the area which is presently under development. The greatest distance between stepout wells is 47 nm east-west and 19 rim north-south -- a total area of 893 sq mi. Housing and support areas are interspersed between existing communes (Figure 3). A total of 480 barracks-type housing units, 25 warehouses, five administration build- ins, two motor pools, open storage areas, a large pipe storage and preparation yard, vehicle parking areas, a multiwing hospital, numerous smaller support buildings, and 18 new buildings under construction are observed. At least 200 trucks are in the parking areas. The oilfield is served by road and water. Three small water transshipment points capable of accommodating small river craft are located in the northeast portion of the oilfield on the Han Chiang (river) which connects to Wuhan. A new east-west road is under construction through the southern portion of the oilfield and extends from Shashih to Wuhan, a distance of approximately 95 rim. Shashih, located 17 mu west of the oilfield, has port facilities on the Yangtze River. The route between Shashih and Wuhan is presently usable by means of completed sections of new road and parallel unimproved road. NPIC Project No ll1108NV HANG HI. .LAKE ila~s~N r OUCH -NO 4N-a.
