These seven areas include atomic energy and key industrial iitMi COPY TOP SECRET CHESS TOP SECRET CHESS PIC/JB-20/59 complexes which are defended by a total of 19 hexagon-type surface-to-air missile (SAM) sites. The presence of the possible transporters suggests that these garrisons may be support centers for the SAM sites. The six areas in which the garrisons are located are (1) Verkh-Neyvinsk, (2) Chelyabinsk, (3) Nizhnaya Tura, 44) Nizhniy Tagil. (5) Sverdlovsk, and (6) Magnitogorsk. The quality and obliquity of the photography precludes identification of any such garrison in the seventh area, Yuryuzan.. A brief description of equipment resembling missile transporters found in the motor pools of these aim anti- aircraft garrisons follows. The garrison located within the Verkh-Neyvinsk atomic energy installa- tion at 57?16'N/60?05'E contains 23 possible missile transporters, each mea- suring 45 to 50 feet in length, in addition to other vehicles and support facilities. 2. Chelyabinsk Area The garrison located in the southwestern section of Chelyabinsk at 56051'N/60?36'E contains 13 possible missile transporters, each measuring approximately 45 feet in length, in addition to numerous conventional antiair- craft weapons. 3. Nizhnaya Tura Area The garrison located within the Nizhnaya Tura atomic energy complex at 58?40'N/59?37'E contains approximately 10 possible missile transporters, each measuring 45 to 50 feet in length, in addition to 24 tarpaulin-covered con- ventional antiaircraft weapons. 4. Nizhaiy Tamil Area The garrison located 3 nautical miles south-southeast of Nizhniy Tagil at 57?52'N/60?00'E contains approximately 40 vehicles, each measuring 45 to 50 feet in length. These vehicles appear to be missile transporters. The garrison located in the northern section of Sverdlovsk at 56?54'N/ 60036'E contains approximately 24 possible prime movers, each measuring 20 to 25 feet in length, and 24 possible trailers, each measuring 30 to 35 feet in length. These trailers are aligned directly behind the prime movers. Addi- tional equipment identified includes 29 conventional antiaircraft weapons. TOP SECRET CHESS ? - TOP SECRET CHESS - PIC /JB-Z0/59 6.
