SAM ACTIVITY NEAR SAROVA, USSR

Sarova is situated in the central uplands region of the USSR, approxi-
mately 8 south of Gorkiy and ZOO nm east-southeast of -
Moscow.
25X1D " KEYHOLE photography of reveals four SAM launch
sites and one SAM support facility positioned for the defense of the Sarova
complex (see Figure 1). Two of Vie launc,12. sites (iterhs .4 and 5) and the
;support facility (item 3) were previously identified on TALENT photog-
25X1D raphy of All these installations lie generally along a
northeast-southwest axis, the "center of which is luOit north of Sarova.

This deployment pattern has not heretofore been observed at SAM-defended
areas in the USSR.
The Sarova complex, which is approximately 10 nm square, was 30-40
25X1D percent covered by scattered clouds On the photography. Ex-
istence of additional SAM activity in the area co4ld not be determined.
Further interpretation of the installations identified was precluded by photo
scale.
The reference point (RP) used in this brief is the geographic center of
25X1A Sarova, 54-55-30N 43-19-30E.

Location.:- In a wooded area one nm southeast of Koshelikha village and
approximately 10 nm northeast of RP.
Remarks: The site appears complete and operational. Loop-type roads
and a circular road serve the launch revetments and three missile-hold
revetments. A support area is adjacent to the operations area on the west.
No security fencing is discernible.

northwest of RP.
Remarks': The site appears complete and operational. The six launch
revetments and the missile-hold revetments are served by a network of
loop roads and a circular road. A support area. is just northeast of the
operations area. A road leads from the site to Balykovo. No security
fencing is discernible.

Approximately one nm west of the Vichkinza River in a pre-
dominantly agricultural area, 8 nm southwest of RP.
The site appears complete and operational. It, was identified on
TALENT photogz-aphy 3/, at which time it was under con-
struction. The overage shows that the six launch revetments
are complete and are connected to the circular road and missile-hold
revetments by a. series of link or loop roads. A ,support area is adjacent
to the operations a:-.ea on the southeast. The operations area is enclosed
by an irregular board fence.
Location: Jlist north of the Moksha River on the edge of a wooded area,
12 nm sou.thWest Of RP.
RUmarks: The site is compleie and operational. It was previously identi-
fied on photography. 4/ No changes are
apparent in e operations or support areas.
