ed these plants and was used in the preparation
of this report. Together the plants form one
integrated installation located in the central part
of Izhevsk at 56-49-30N 53-10-25E (Figure 1).
In fact, they are so integrated within the instal-
lation that it is not possible to delineate individual
components.
The combined installation--one of the oldest
steel and arms producing facilities in the USSR
--has a total ground area of approximately
13,975,000 square feet and a total usable floor
space of approximately 2,445,445 square feet
(Figure 2). During World War II it produced
explosives, small arms, and artillery. Since
World War II the installation has expanded its
production of military and civilian small arms
and has engaged in the development of steel
production methods and metallurgy as well as
in the manufacture of domestic consumer goods.
The major components of the installation are
annotated on Figure 2 and described in Table 1.
Snow cover and the poor image quality of the
KEYHOLE photography preclude definite identi-
fication of some buildings and the location of
rail spurs within the installation.
