(b) CIA/PID Project C 55-64 (S 131-64)
1. This memorandum is in response to your requirement dated 3 January
1964 which requests a detailed description of the SSM launch site recently
identified near Bayram-Ali In Tur iskaya, USSR.
2. This site Is situated in a desert area nine nautical miles north of
Bayram-Ali and twenty nautical miles northeast of Yary at 37-46-OON 62-12-OOE.
Both of these cities are rail served.
and was co lete at that time. The area of the site
only been observed one time on. KEYHOLE photography
was covere on at which time construction haa not
been started. The site is similar to six other singly deployed 1U BM and IRBM
launch areas in the USSR and a pad separation of 750 feet puts it into an IRBM
category rather than MRBM.: Other similar IRBMs are located at Zhuravka and
Belomersk.
The site consists of four elongated clearings aligned on an azimuth of
approximately 185 degrees inter-connected by what appears to be unpaved roads.
Four earth-mounded ready buildings, each measuring 75 by 200 feet, are present.
Three of these buildings are positioned behind a launch pad with the fourth
being on the central service road. Positioned behind the second pad, when
counting from east to west, is a building similar in size to the ready buildings
but not earth-mounded.
No housing facilities are present and there are no erectors or other pieces of
equipment visible within the launch area on good quality photography. There are
no improved roads serving the site and the nearest identified SSMA activity is at
Kurgar_cha, 250 nautical miles to the northeast.
esent at the launch area are two support buildings and a category
A number of small structures and bunkers
are positioned e weer e auiic 1 p,~ s: as indicated in the attached graphic.
