A study of vertical aerial photography taken between reveal POL storage facilities at four of the five airfields. POL storage facilities ? were net located on aerial photography of Cheng-hai airfield located near Swatow. The POL storage facilities identified at Han-tai, Lung-ties. Ching-yang, and Lung-chi are apparently of similar construction and appearance. A first class road extends from the airfield to a "loop" road located 18CO to 7000 feet from the airfield. The loop provides an average of 5000 feet of roadway and it is along both sides of this loop road that a number of installations have been dispersed which are probably used for POL storage. A study of vertical aerial photography indicates that these installations are of the following construction: Apparently. ten to fourteen small tanks have been laid down in rows in shallow. rectangular excavations or on a slightly raised rectangular base. The size of the tanks are similar to those reported in the watow area by a Hong Kong source in SIRAB 3.40. dated 2C July 1955. These tanks were reported as cylindrical tanks about 10 feet in length The tanks are then covered by earth or a low rectangular structure. Small buildings located along the road are probably used for facilities needed in handling the incoming drums of fuel and other operations carried on in the fuel storage area. The POL installations at Nan-tai and Lung-tien are probably completed Construction work is still In progress at Ching yang and lung-chi, Limited stereo coverage and poor ttality of photography at Ching yang did not permit proper evaluation. There is a probability that the number of storage installations at Ching yang and Lung-chi will increase. ? As of the date of the latest available photo coverage there were 19 storage installations at Nan-tai. 24 probably storage bunkers or installations at Ching yang. 25 storage installations at Lung-tien, and 11 storage installations at lung-chi. If each installation contains an average of ?12 tanks then the capacity of the POL storage areas at field is as follows: Nan-tai approximately 1025 metric tons lung-tien approximately 1350 metric tons Cutting-yang approximately 1300 metric tons Lung-chi approximately 60C metric tons MAX-TAI The POL storage area is located 35001 north of the airfield (enclosure No. 1). Nineteen storage installations are dispersed along the one mile of loop road Excavations for th i t ll ti . ese ns a a ons were first noticed on= photography. On subsequent photography dated 25X1 0 II 0 rectangular structures averaging ten to fourteen. Unidentified circular objects-about diameter could be seen along the forward edge of the structures. Five buildinge'ranging in size from 10'x5C' to 30'x135' located in the area are of recent construction. LUNG-TM There are two probable POL storage installations located approximately 1800' north of the Lung-tiers airfield. (See enclosure No. 2). Photo revealed eleven rectangular excavations approximately 15'x,60' under construction in each area. 164 light colored objects were dispersed along the road 800' west of the east storage area. The probability are storage tanks for the POL storage areas is strongly suggested. ? Subseq ent photo coverage obtained on 1 -1 II dark objects in excavations in the east storage area and a reduced number of light colored objects dispersed along the road. Coverage obtained up to II showed that all excavations have apparently been filled with an average often probable tanks and covered with earth leaving a rectangular mound sometimes irregular in shape. A row of apcroximately ten small circular mounds are visible on each installation. The small circular objects dispersed along the nearby roads have disappeared. CHING-YANG The POL storage area is located approximately 70(0 feet west of the-airfield. There appear to be 24 storage installations in various stages of construction along the loop road. The installations first appeared as a shallow excavation 109 to 15' in width and 60' to 8C' in :length. Later coverage revealed up to thirteen small objects approximately S-F-C-R-E-T 1 i=r diameter placed side by side in a number of the excavations. The small objects appear black. suggesting a coating of dark substance possibly for. rust prevention. From photography dated it appeared that a number of the excavations with the probable tanks had been covered possibly with earth or a structure similar to the pan-tai installations previausly discussed in this report. LUNG-CHI The probable POL storage installation at Lung-chi is located 25000 north of the runway. Construction was first noticed on photo coverage obtained Coverage obtained up to excavations dispersed along the loop road. Objects approximately 5'x101 have been placed in rows in a number of the excavations. None of the excavations have been covered but it is assumed that it will be done and the appearance of the installations will be similar to those at the other airfieldso DATES 7F PHOTO COVERAGE SECRET NO.1 SECRET SECRET i ~ ~ STO AGE ARA STORAGE POL STORAGE LUNG-TIEN AIRFIELD 25/34N-119/28E- SCALE I'I2000 SECRET AREA Approved For Release 2006/11/03: CIA-RDP78T05439A000300200022-2 SECRET- P O L STORAGE LUNG-CHI AIRFIELD 24?33'N 117? 39'E SCALE: 1/9200 PO L STORAGE AREA V%s ?s~ SHOP B L DGS.
