This memorandum is in answer to your requirement which requested annotated enlargements of the Chemical Plant in K'ai-yuan, Yunnan Province, Communist China. ement two photographic enlargements of the i r 2. In answer to your requ specified chemical plant are enclosed with this memorandum. The first ra hic d t e 25X1C (CIA/PID/IB-P-321/64) was obtained from dot 25X1 1111 25X1C and the second (CIA/PID/IB-P-322/6+) from 111111111 A complete analysis of this plant cannot be MaIM a is time because the plant is still under construction and its final products are not known. However, it appears that this plant will produce nitrogenous fertilizers. 3. The northern portion of the plant contains a steam plant, a retort build- ing, two gasometers, scrubbers and a contact oven. In this series of buildings and equipment hydrogen and nitrogen gas will be producted and stored in the east-, ern gasometer. This gas will then be pumped to the large monitor roof building, in which it will be compressed and synthesized into ammonia. The processes, thus far, are common to most nitrogenous fertilizer plants. The remaining installations at this plant are still under construction and therefore their identification is tenative. Part of the ammonia produced will be sent to the small building, SE of the compressor and synthesis building, to make nitric acid. The remaining ammonia fertilizers produced or will be f th e will be used directly in the production o stored. When this plant is compared to other fertilizer plants of a similiar size, such as the plants located in Canton and Ch'u-Hsien, a sulfuric acid plant is normally found at the location of the large double-bay arch roofed building. Since the other facilities and the flow process at these plants appear similar, it is assumed that the sulfuric acid plant at installation, will be located DECLASSIFICATION REVIEW BY NIMA / DoD S- ! 25X1 B 25X1 B CROP I Excluded trwi 2:t53tlc daT rr 2cd C_:.C _-ill.~;t97 NO FO EIG !JSSEM SUBJECT: Kai-yuan Chemical Plant, Yunnan Province of this plant will vent the unusable gases produced. The apparatus to convey the pyrites, if pyrites are used as the source of sulfur, to the plant and to remove the waste and the roasters have not as yet been constructed. This equip- ment probably will be placed between the warehouses and the acid plant. The small, well ventilated building south of.the possible-acid-plant-is a-possible finished product building. There is a conveyor leading from it to the warehouse adjacent to the railroad spur. A more accurate description can be gdven only after construction has been completed. 25X1A 4.
