SUBJECT Haiphong, North Vietnam, Port Facilities
REFERENCE (1) Requirement No. C-RR4-81,025
(2) Project No. C-269/64
1. This memorandum is in response to the above mentioned requirement
calling for a detailed, comparative photo analysis of the port facilities at
Haiphong, North Vietnam (20 53N/lo6 41E).
2. Haiphong, located on the south bank of the Cua Cam (river) approx-
imately ten miles upstream from the Gulf of Tonkin, is the most important port
in North Vietnam. ` -.
The three mile stretch of the Cua Cam (river) that makes up the harbor
contains nearly 4,200 linear feet of wharfage (annotations 9,10,13 and 15 CIA/
PIE s-P-507/64). These offshore wharves, except the coaling wharf (annotation
10), have no mechanical cargo handling equipment. The coaling wharf makes use
of four conveyers and seven automotive jib cranes. The warehouses at annotation
11, which parallel the shoreline and are directly linked to the wharf area,
contain over 500,000 square feet of floorspace. The open storage area at
annotation 14, which extends to the waterfront, has over one million square feet
of area.
The petroleum storage area (annotation 20), which is located on the
extreme west end of the port area, contains three oil bunkering piers; 800, 330,
510, feet in length.
The largest vessel that can be accommodated at Haiphong is estimated to
be 525 feet long and have a loaded draft of no more than 30 feet. The shipping

included five ocean-going freighters; the largest being 505 feet long at annota-
tion 13, three vessels 450, 390, and 330 feet long at annotation 10 and a 250
foot vessel at annotation 15; and seven coastal freighters that vary in length
from 120 to 195 feet which are moored at annotation 3,6,7,10, and 15. This ship-

ocean-going freighters; the largest being 500 feet long at annotation 10, two
other vessels 450-and-425 feet long also at annotation 10, a 350 foot 'chip at
annotation 13 and two freighters 450 feet long at annotation 25 and 250 feet
long at annotation 26; and two coastal type freighters 185 and 175 feet in
length which are moored at annotations 3 and 13 respectively.
