MEMORANDUM FOR: Chief, Manufacturing and Services Division, ORR
ATTENTION 25X1 A
THROUGH Chief, Requirements Branch, Reconnaissance Group, CGS
FROM Chief, CIA/PID (NPIC)
SUBJECT Unidentified Buildings in Southeast Laos
REF'ERE'NCES (1) DDI Requirements-No. C-D14-81,250
(2) CIA/PID Project No. C 613-64
1. In response to the above referenced requirement, a search of aerial
photography covering Southeast Laos was conducted in order to locate and study
U/I longhouses or warehouses mentioned above.
2. Seven villages, or groups of dwellings, were selected to illustrate
the type of buildings located in this area. Annotated photos of each are
enclosed (CIA/PID/I_B-P-529/64 thru P-53464) and their locations are shown on
the enclosed annotated map (CIA/PID/IB-P-52864). All photos were reproduced
at the same enlargement factor, and in order to effect a better comparison, the
length of one or more of the longest houses is given for each group of-., buildings.
Although the houses varied greatly in length, they all appear to be costructed
according to the same general plan; that is, an elongated narrow structure with
a thatched roof. Although these houses vary in length from 15 feet to approx-
imately 160 feet, there are so many of each of the various sizes as to make no one
longhouse exceptional or unusual. Without any apparent additional indicators up-
on which to draw a conclusion, it.is therefore assumed that all buildings which
wl Wnalyzed, are merely varied examples of longhouses found in this area. These
buildings are evidently used by the Laotians for crop storage and1irr communal
family living. 25X1 A
The analyst assigned to this project was who may
beacted on extension 2546 should questions arise concerning this memorandum.
