TOP SECRET This report is one`?1n a series on Soviet Ground Force and Logistic installations being prepared for a DIA/CIA Panel. The series is being coordinated, published and disseminated by NPIC. The photographic analysis is being performed by the NPIC Photographic Analysis Group, the CIA Photographic Intelligence Division (NPIC), and the Production Center 1Pic (DIA). The photographic analysis for this particular re- port was performed by the CIA Photographic Intelligence Division. In the interest of uniformity, the titles and letter designators for the facilities observed at these installations are identical with those appearing in the project requirement. When a specific facility is not observed both its title and letter designator are omitted in the report. Titles and letter designators for the various facilities are as follows: (A) railroad service, (B) road service, (C) landing strips, (D) administrative and troop housing areas, (E) storage areas, (F) am- munition storage areas, (G) POL storage areas, (H) other buildings and facilities, (J) equipment storage /maintenance areas, (K) athletic fields, (L) small arms firing ranges, (M) driver training areas, (N) tank/ assault gun firing ranges, (P) flat trajectory firing ranges, (Q) artillery emplacements (batteries), (R) infantry or combined arms field train- ing areas or courses, (S) special training facilities, (T) unidentified facilities or tracking activity. TOP SECRET 25X1 25X1 TOP SECRET PROBABLE ARTILLERY TEST RANGE (54-59N 082-25E) CHIK, NOVOSIBIRSKAYA OBLAST, USSR SIBERIAN MD Railroad, double track Railroad, single track Road ---- Trail --- Power Iine TOP SECRET 25X1 25X1 25X1 TOP SECRET A probable artillery test range is located 2.5 kilometers (km) south of Chik, 33 km west of Novosibirsk, and 15 km east of Kochenevo (Figure 1). The installation is served by a spur of the Omsk-Novosibirsk rail line and by improved, all-weather roads connecting the test facility to Chik and Novosibirsk. The range is approximately one km divide and extends south approximately 25 km. The rangehead and the impact area encompass,ap- proximately 10,000 acres. A study of the installation (Figures 2 and 3) reveals that it is probably used to evaluate and test artillery. The rangehead complex contains a total of 68 buildings consisting of 12 probable administrative buildings/barracks, one unre- vetted and eight reverted secured probable ex- plosives storage buildings, 21 probable research and development buildings, and 26 support buildings. A related possible electronics site, located approximately 2 km southwest of the rangehead facility, contains 11 buildings and four semicircular structures. No significant changes have taken place in the installation since its initial coverage ]Lhe latest available photog- raphyl indicates moderate Railroad Service There is a rail spur in the support area. Road Service The installation is served by improved, all- weather secondary roads, which connect the test facility with Chik and Novosibirsk. Administrative and Troop Housing Area Area D (Figure 3) contains 12 administra- tive buildings /barracks and 15 support buildings. Ammunition Storage Areas Area F1 contains four 75- by 45-foot re- vetted probable explosives storage buildings, four 60- by 20-foot unrevetted buildings, and a guard post of undetermined size. Area F2 is another guard post for the ex- plosives storage area and measures 110, by 20 feet. Other Buildings Area Hi is a rangehead facility containing probable research and development buildings with associated minor support structures. There are 21 buildings in the area. Area H2 is a rail -served transloading point. It is partially secured and contains 10 support buildings. No loading docks were observed. Area H3 is a related possible electronics site which is located down range. It has 11 buildings of undetermined type and four uni- dentified semicircular structures.
