1. This memorandum is in response to the referenced 1-equirement.
concerning a rail study of Communist China on the area covered by AMS
Map Sheet NM.52. This study is designed primarily for the purpose of
determining the extent of new rail constructionosince
2. The study was based on information obtained from the following
missions: -

3. All rail lines observed,on the above referenced missions are
plotted on the enclosed annotated-overlay (CIA/PID/IB-P-l480/61+). The
rail line, which proceeds northward along the..,Pang-wang Ho (River), was
evidently constructed to serve logging and lumbering activity in that
area. The rail line, which proceeds north from Peian, (126 32N - 48 13E),
is operational to the Na-mo-erh Ho (River). Rail facilities in Peian
consist of a classification yard, turntable and repair shops. Here
25X D reconstruction activity was observed: a rail bridge was constructed across
the river betwee Other signs, such as recent
scarring, seem to indicate that further rail reconstruction along this
line is planned.
