USSR RAIL LINE SEARCH FOR ICBM ACTIVITY
This report presents the results of a search
for ICBM activity along rail lines in the USSR
25X1 D on KEYHOLE photography from Mission oft
25X1 D The search was conducted
according to the following established criteria:
Examination was made of all stretches of
rail line (broad-gauge main, branch, and spur
lines connected to or a part of the main USSR
rail network) which were 8 nautical miles (nm)
25X1 D or more in length and were covered for a dis-
tance of 15 nm on both sides by photography of
good enough quality to determine with a
the-'existence of
ICBM complexes with launch areas resembling
the soft launch areas, hard launch areas, or
single silo construction at Tyuratam Missile
Test Center. It should be noted that the above
degree of confidence of detection applies only
where a support facility, road pattern, and one
or more launch areas could be discerned.
This search has negated, in terms of ICBM
activity, approximately 17,275 nm of Soviet
rail line and has produced no evidence of ICBM
activity that has not been previously reported.
A total of 24 overlays of World Aeronautical
Charts showing all rail lines searched with
negative results has been prepared. These over-
lays also show the location of all ICBM launch
complexes identified to date and the applicable
KEYHOLE mission pass number on which the
rail lines were covered. Copies of the 24
overlays, which constitute a graphic supplement
to this report, have been forwarded to the CIA
requester and to the TALENT Control Officers
of the Army, Navy, Air Force, DIA, and NSA.
Further reproduction and dissemination of these
overlays to subordinate commands will be the
responsibility of the above agencies.
