ILLEGIB Approved For Release 2004/03/26 : CIA-RDP78TO5439A000400270068-8 Approved For Release 2004/03/26 : CIA-RDP78TO5439A000400270068-8 TOP SECRET This report is one in a series on Soviet Ground Force and Logistic installations being prepared for a DIA/CIA Panel. The series is being coordinated, published and disseminated by NPIC. The photographic analysis is being performed by the :EPIC Photographic Analysis Group, the CIA Photographic Intelligence Division ('EPIC), and the Production Center 1Plc (DIA). The photographic analysis for this particular re- port was performed by the Production Center 1Plc. In the interest of uniformity, the titles and letter designators for the facilities observed at these installations are identical with those appearing in the project requirement. When a specific facility is not observed both its title and letter designator are omitted in the report. Titles and letter designators for the various facilities are as follows: (A) railroad service, (B) road service, (C) landing strips, (D) administrative and (G) POL storage areas, (H) other buildings and storage 'maintenance areas, (K) athletic fields, ranges, (M) driver training areas, (N) tank./ munition storage areas, facilities, (J) equipment (L) small arms firing assault gun firing ranges, (P) flat trajectory firing ranges, (Q) artillery ing areas or courses, (S) special facilities or tracking activity. It.is probably used by all military units billeted in Riga and the surrounding area. The training area covers approximately 10,000 acres and contains small-arms firing ranges, driver-training areas, tank/assault-gun firing ranges, flat-trajectory firing ranges, and 2 bivouac areas (Figure 2). The bivouac areas are probably what is listed in the Bombing En- cyclopedia as Riga Barracks and Maneuver Area Ropazi used in the preparation of this report. Compara- tive analysis reveals that the level of activity has been relatively heavy, except during the winter months. The Riga-Saulkrasty railroad passes ad- jacent to the northwestern portion of the training area. Primary and secondary roads from Riga, Ropazi, and Jugla serve the training area. Administrative and Troop Housing Areas Area D1 contains approximately 10 build- ings. Area D2 contains approximately 10 build- ings. Both areas appear to be bivouac areas since there are few permanent buildings. No tents or tent bases are discernible in either area. An athletic field (K) is located in Area D1. Small-Arms Firing Ranges Area L contains 4 small-arms ranges--two 130 by 150 feet, one 300 by 150 feet, and one 900 TOP SECRET by 180 feet. Each range has 2 built-up sides and a mounded target end. A small building, which is probably used for range support/ control, is at the firing end of each range. Driver-Training Areas Area M1 is a rectangular area containing 3 figure-8 wheeled- vehicle driver-training courses. Area M2 is a large, irregular-shaped area containing several closed-circuit tracked-vehi- cle driver- training courses. Heavy ground scar- ring indicates that this area is very active. Approximately 11 km west of the training area is an irregular-shaped, tracked-vehicle driver-training course. This course does not appear to be associated with the training area. Tank/Assault-Gun Firing Ranges Area N1 is 4,200 feet long and contains twelve 2,500-foot lanes and 8 moving targets. Area N2 is 6,200 feet long and contains six 2,800-foot lanes, 4 moving targets, and an impact area.
