This memcrandutn is in partial response to your requirement 'dated 25 January 1965 requesting a detailed search within a 25 mile radius of 17 locations in China to determine the existence of any construction activity that may have guided missile or nuclear energy significance. 2. This memorandum describes construction activity in the vicinity,.pf two of the requested locations, i.e. Suntsun, Anhui (31-06u ]18-06E) and Tangling, Anhui (30-56N 117-47E). Since these locations are only 15 nm apart they were combined into one large search area. 3. The folla-ing construction -activitywas observed. Although no missile or nuclear energy significance can be determined, same of this construction activity may account for the reported appearance of military engineer units in this area. a. W VlW TUNGLIIG Railroad (31-2021 118-23E - 30-57N 3-17-47E:) A railroad, approximately 27 long, has been constructed and is in operation fig Wulhu southwest to -(bung-Mins-Chieh, a small village 10 nm southwest of been Fanchang (31-05N 118-11E). Beyond Chung-Ming-Chieh the roadbeci~v~ Wo. constructed for an additional seven miles in the direction of , but ? rails have not been laid, bridges have not been constructed, and the project- appears inactive. Only five more miles are required to connect with the.. railroad in the Tungling area, but the railroad would have to cross low-lying 25X1D areas subject to flooding. Possibly these flooding conditions have imposed engineering problems that have resulted in a delay in railroad construction. 25X1 D 5_ /6- #i81 SUBJECTt Construction Activity in Vicinity ofr3, Suntisun T mgling, China ZV MS Ajv/ 0:) S TUN Probable Liquid +torage Area (31-o4N 118-07E) Approx1ma ly one mile nortb-northeast of Sunteun (31-03N 118-06E) a probable storage a is under oonatru tian, consisting of eight circular structures, 25X1B each a imately 75 feet in diameter and resembling semi-buried POL tanks.
