SEARCH FOR GUIDED MISSILE/NUCLEAR ENERGY ACTIVITY
SHIH-CHIA-CHUANG, CHINA
This report is one of several dealing with numerous locations in China being
searched for guided missile or nuclear energy activity. Collateral information
has reported the appearance of military engineer units in these areas. This
report presents the results of a search in the area of Shih-Chia-Chuang.
SHIH-CHIA-CHUANG
38-03N 114-30E
Shih-Chia-Chuang (formerly Shih-Men) is a large industrial city located 140
nautical miles (nm) southwest of Pei-P?ing, China. This city is a major railroad
center and producer of textiles, iron and steel, and pharmaceuticals. Although
the city underwent considerable expansion during the decade prior to 1960, there
is no photographic evidence of major expansion since that time. There is no
apparent construction activity in the vicinity of this city that has any missile
or nuclear energy-significance.
The following items of intelligence ipterest were noted in this search area.
A. Shih-Chia-Chuang Army Training Center (38-03N 114-25E). A large
military training area with hundreds of barracks and storage buildings, located
on the western outskirts of the city.
B. Huo-Lu Military Barracks Area (38-05N 114-18E). Located eight nm
northwest of Shih-Chia-Chuang, in the vicinity of Huo-Lu, are seven military
compounds each containing 40 to 50 barracks buildings.
C. Shih-Chia-Chuang Military Airfield (38-05N 114-25E). A major opera-
tional fighter airfield with an 8,000-foot concrete runway, located on northwestern
outskirts of the city.
D. Kao-Cheng Airfield (38-OON 114-46E). Located ten nm east of Shih-
Chia-Chuang, a sod, circular airfield, 6,000 feet in diameter. An active, military
airfield probably used for training.
E. Yuan-Shih Airfield (37-47N 114-35E). Located 13 nm south of Shih-
Chia-Chuang, a sod, circular airfield, 6,000 feet in diameter. An active military
airfield probably used for training.
F. Ching-Hsing Coal Mine Area (38-05N 114-03E). A large coal mining
region with several rail spurs, coal-dressing plants and mines, located 20 nm
west of Shih-Chia-Chuang.

No missile or nuclear energy association can be related to the above installa-
tions however their presence could account for the appearance of military engineer
units in the area of Shih-Chia-Chuang.
