This report.is_one in a series on Soviet Ground Force and Logistic
installations being prepared for a DIA/CIA Panel. 'The.series.is-being_
coordinated, published and disseminated by NPIC. The photographic
analysis is being performed by the \?PIC Photographic Analysis Group,
the CIA Photographic Intelligence Division (NP.IC), and the Production
Center iPla (DIA). .The photographic analysis for this particular re-
port was performed by the Production Center I P l a.
In the interest Of uniformity, the titles and letter designators for
the facilities observed at these installations are identical with those
appearing in the project requirement. When a specific facility is not
observed both its title and letter designator are omitted in the report.
Titles and letter designators for the various facilities are as
follows: (A) railroad service, (13) road service, (C) landing strips,
(D) administrative and troop housing areas, (E) storage areas, (F) am-
munition storage areas, (G) POL storage areas, (11) other buildings and
facilities, (J) ec(uipment storage 'maintenance areas, (K) athletic fields,

Grozny Training Area West is located 16
kilometers 'km) west of Groznyy and 4 km
north of Za an-Yurt and is probably used by
troop units stationed in Groznyy (Figure 1).
It covers ap roximately 40 square kin and con-
tains a tank firing range, a direct fire range, a
motor vehic e storage /maintenance area, and 4
main driver-training courses. There is a re-

ported tent cantonment area between Z_akan-
Yurt and Samashki (Fi ure.2).

DESCRIPTION OF INSTALLATION
PO1.. Storage Area
The tr ining area is located 1.4 km north
of the Gr nyy-Ordzhonikidze main rail line.
A first-class all-weather road connects
the trainin area with Groznyy and there are
numerous .ibternal secondary roads and trails.
A maj~r airfield is immediately east of
Administra ion and Troop housing Areas
Area 1 contains 2 multistory barracks/
administration buildings (probably for range
support personnel) and 4 small support build-
ings.
Area 1 2 contains a a reported tent canton-
ment area. No signs of recent activity could
ceivingrext -emely limited-use
Groznvv is one of the major POL re-
fining centers in the USSR. There are num-
erous POE tanks in the vicinity. Equipment Storage /Maintenance Area
Area J contains ' a motor park 500 by
850 feet, 3 vehicle storage buildings 50 by
250 feet, and 1 vehicle maintenance building
50 by 150 feet.' From 15 to 20 probable tanks
were--Visible in the motor-park
Area A11 contains an irregular, closed-
loop driver-training area.
Area M2 contains 2 elongated figure-8 dri-
ver-training areas.
Area M3 contains an irregular, closed-loop
driver-training area with extensive trackage and
ground scarring.
Area M4 contains an irregular, closed-loop

driver-training area with characteristic ob-
stacles.
Tank/Assault-Gun Firing Range
Area N is a 4,000-foot tank 'assault-gun
firing range containing approximately - four
2,500-foot lanes with 3 to 4.moving-target tracks.
Range control facilities are to the rear of the
Area P is a 1,250-foot flat-trajectory firing
range. There is a distinct firing line with
range control facilities and 2 short firing lanes
ahead of the firing line.
Vrtillerv Emplacements (Batteries)
Although there are extensive ground scars
and old revetments in the area, no artillery
emplacements are specifically identifiable.
