The 20 June 1965 issue of the Soviet magazi.~e "OGONII{" displayed a
photograph on the back cover of an IC~i being launched from a silo. This
missile has subsequently been identified as an SS-7 and after correlating
the ground photograph with KEYHOLE photography, it is believed that the
view shown in "OGONEK" was taken at haunch Area D-1, Tyuratam Missile Test
Center. Figlu~e 1 illustrates both the view from "OGONEK"
It is interesting to note that on the photograph published by the
Soviets ;there is a "W" shaped exhaust indicating the presence of ports
on either side of the silo.
- There are studs on the missile near the top of .the first stage which
could indicate that SS-7 rides out ofOType III A silos on rails. ?The
latter observation would explain haw the missile is launched from the i5-
foot diameter silo consistently observed at Type III-A lauYich sites.
