COMPARISON OF TARGET DRONES OBSERVED AT ASTRAKHAN AIRFIELD
NORTHWEST AND KAPUSTIN YAR GUIDED MISSILE TEST CENTER, USSR
A total of 18 target d7nes (7 in the launch area and 11 in the maintenance/
storage area) were observed (See Figures 1 and 2)
at Astrakhan Airfield NW (46 24N-47 53E) located 6 nm NW of Astrakhan (46 21N-48
02E). Three drones were observed (See Figure 3)
at launch site D-3 (48 30N-46 19E) at Kapustin Yar Guided Missile Test Center
located 23 nm ESE of Kapustin Yar (48 35N-45 45E) and 13 nm NNE of Akhtubinsk
(48 17N-46 loE).
Comparison of the drone at Astrakhan and Kapustin Yar reveals that all are
probably LA-17M type target drones. Three of the drones at Astrakhan and two of
those at Kapustin Yar having the best definition were measured. The results of the
mensuration revealed fairly consistant dimensions for the drone in that all those
measured have a wing chord Two of the drones at Astrakhan have wing
spans and fuselage lengths of 2 feet and the third has a wing span
as does one of the drones at Kapustin Yar. The other
drone at Kapustin Yar has a wing span and fuselage length
All the drones observed at both Astrakhan and Kapustin Yar appear to have
bullet-shaped noses, mid-mounted straight wings and horizontal stabilizers mounted at
the base of the vertical stabilizer.
The quality of the photography onl Iwas excellent; however, the
quality of Mission 4017 could only be considered as good.
All measurements have been made by the NPIC Technical Intelligence Division,
and are considered .to be accurate within L 5 feet or / 5%, whichever is,greater.
