This report is one in a series on Soviet Ground Force and Logistic
installations being prepared for a Dl.\ 'CIA Panel. The series is being
coordinated, published and disseminated by NPIC. The photographic
analysis is being performed by the APIC Photographic .Analysis Group,
the CA.A Photographic Intelligence (Division API('1, and the Production
Center 1P1 a 'l)I-:A1. The photn_rapl-.Sc analysis for this particular re-
port was performed by the CIA Phntocrap!h.ic Intelligence Division
In the interest of uniformity, the titles and letter designators for
the facilities observed at these install at inns are identical with those
appearing in the project requirement. When a specific facility is not
observed both its title and letter designator are omitted in the report.
Titles and letter designators for the various facilities are as
follows: (:A) railroad service, rB road service, r(:l landing strips,
(D) administrative and troop housing areas. I') storage areas. rIC am-
munition storage areas, (G) POL storage areas, IF other buildings and
facilities, (J) equipment storage 'maintenance areas. K) athletic fields.
(L) small arms- firing ranges, C'\li driver training areas, N) tank'
assault gun firing ranges, (P) flat trajectory firing ranges. O) artillery
emplacements (batteries), IC infantry- or combined arms field train-
ing areas or courses, (Sl special training facilities, (T) unidentified
facilities or tracking activity.

Samarkand Army Barracks N\\- is loca-
ted in the west-northwest part of Samarkand
(Figure 1).
The installation covers approximately 30
acres and contains 2 probable barracks/ad-
ministration buildings, 3 probable barracks, S
barracks, 2 storage buildings, 5 probable storage
buildings, 7 probable vehicle sheds, 17 support
buildings, and a probable parade field (Figures
2 and.3).
The area was covered on -KL1'l-IOLL
missions between
No changes to the facilities were observed, and
a light level of activity was observed on all
coverage.
Area Dl, secured by a wall, contains 2
multistory, U-shaped probable barracks/admin-
istration buildings, 3 multistory probable bar-
racks, and 13 support buildings.
Area D2, secured by a wall, contains 8
multistory barracks, probable storage build-
ings, and a support building.
L2uipment Storage/Maintenance Area
Area J contains 7 probable vehicle sheds
(two 36(1 by 3z:) feet, two 325 by 35 feet, two 250
by 40 feet, and one 400 by 40 feet), 2 storage
buildings, and 3 support buildings.
Area K is a probable parade field.
