ARMOR ORDER OF BATTLE SIGHTINGS IN CHINA
This report provides an analysis of 22 armor order of battle sightings based on
photography covering the period from July through December 1976. In North China, seven
tank regiments, four tank battalions, and elements of one tank battalion were observed. In
South China, three tank regiments, seven tank battalions, one tank/assault gun regiment,
three armored battalions, one armored company, and one mechanized infantry regiment
were seen.
Armored units have been observed at 10 installations in North China. In the Peking
Military Region (MR), an increase in tanks confirmed the presence of a tank regiment at
Hsing-tai, Han-tan, Hun-yuan, and Huo-lu, and two tank battalions at Wu-ching. Also in
the Peking MR, the first observation of tanks at Nan-tso and tanks and armored personnel
carriers at Ma-shen-chiao established the presence of two tank battalions at Nan-tso and at
least elements of a tank battalion at Ma-shen-chiao. In the Shen-yang MR, an increase in
tanks indicated that a tank regiment was at Sa-erh-tu. In the Lan-chou MR, the first iden-
tification of tanks at Cheng-cheng and Chin-chi indicated the presence of a tank regiment at
each installation.
Armored units were also identified at 12 installations in South China. In the Chi-nan
MR, an increase in tanks indicated the presence of a tank regiment at both Hsu-chou Ar-
mored Division Headquarters and Hsu-chou Army Barracks; also, the first sighting of M-
1967 armored personnel carriers at Chia-wang established the presence of the first
mechanized infantry regiment subordinate to an armored division identified in China. In
the Nan-ching MR, an increase in tanks confirmed the presence of two battalions at Ling-
chia-chiao, Mu-tu, and Chih-ho, and an increase in tanks/assault guns at Kuan-tien in-
dicated the presence of at least two battalions of armor. Also in the Nan-ching MR, the first
observation of tanks at Wu-hsing indicated the presence of a tank battalion. In the Fou-chou
MR, the first identification of tanks and armored vehicles implied the presence of an ar-
mored battalion at Chang-tai. In the Canton MR, an increase in tanks verified the presence
of a tank regiment at Chang-ning. Also, a company-sized armored unit was observed for the
first time at Chang-chi. In the Kun-ming MR, an increase in armor confirmed the presence
of a tank/assault gun regiment at Kun-ming.
