Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/08/18: CIA-RDP78TO5698A000100010023-1 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/08/18: CIA-RDP78T05698A000100010023-1 Top Secret RUFF Missile System Component Calibration Facilities for the Soviet SS-1 7, -18, and -19 Missile Systems Missile system component calibration facilities have been newly identified at the 12 ICBM complexes in the Soviet Union where the SS-17, -18, and -19 missile systems are or will be deployed (see Table 1). Two types of calibration buildings have been identified. One type, a T-shaped building, was seen at only four of the 12 complexes. The other type, a rectangular building, was seen at the remaining eight complexes. These two types of calibration buildings contain an instrumentation room with narrow, horizontal, and slit-type sighting windows on three sides and three large pedestal support positions. The dimensions of these buildings are shown on Figures 1 and 2. Six to ten calibration monuments are at varying distances on either side and in front of the buildings (Figures 1 and 2). All of the calibration monuments are on heavy concrete bases and are elevated and leveled. This method of construction allows a view of the furthest calibration monument through the sighting windows from the calibration building. Each calibration monument is connected to the calibration building by an underground cable. The location of these calibration facilities varies among these complexes. It is usually near the rail-to-road transfer point, isolated from heavy vehicular traffic, and generally oriented on a north/south axis. Table 1 lists the complexes at which this facility has been identified, the type of calibration building, the location within the complex, the associated missile system, and the date of completion.
