Deployment Patterns of Polish
Communications Equipment
A comparison of the communications training area at Walcz Army Barracks 004
and two other training areas reveals a photographic signature of field-deployed
Polish signal units. This signature consists of the large number and the pattern of vehicle
revetments. The revetments are close together and are perpendicular to the access roads. In
many cases, the revetments are on each side of the access road.
The Walcz Army Barracks houses a signal regiment subordinate to the Polish Ministry
of National Defense. A network of vehicle revetments and hardstands is adjacent to the
vehicle storage area at the installation (Figure 1). Probable communications equipment has
frequently been observed in this area. Walcz is the only Polish signal regiment with a local
training facility of this type.
Part of a command post set up for exercise SHIELD 76 was in Torun Training Area

Podgorz 41 Thirty-six revetments in a pattern similar to the pattern at 25X1
the Walcz training facility were under construction in a wooded area 25X1
(Figure 2). These revetments were later camouflaged.
At Zambrow Training Area Czerwony Bor I another probable signal-
related, field-deployed site is present (Figure 3). A review of th coverage of this
area indicated that an exercise was probably in progress. Camouflage netting was placed
over some of the revetments. The site, which is in a wooded area, contained at least 36
revetments. This training area is approximately 62 nautical miles northeast of Warsaw.
Photographic analysis of these locations coincides with collateral information on Polish
signal units and their deployment practices. One report* indicated that revetting of vehicles
and the use of netting and vegetation as camouflage are part of field deployment procedures.
This was quite evident during SHIELD 76. Another report** indicated that 36 com-
munications vans are part of a divisional command and control net. These vans are ap-
parently cable connected to the equipment belonging to the divisional signal battalion,
which is set up nearbv.F-
