Sary-Shagan Possible Radar Under Construction, USSR
construction was continuing on a large rectangular
building foundation 1,930 meters south of Sary-Shagan HEN HOUSE A
The dimensions for the foundation are similar to the dimensions for the large phased-array
radar at the Olenegorsk HEN HOUSE Radar Facility and the receiver for
the Pechora Phased-Array Radar Facility The construction activity on
the building foundation has been recently targeted as Sary-Shagan Possible Radar Under
Construction (Figure 1).

were 104 by 24 meters; the foundation area was occupied by footings arranged in five rows

A housing/support area northeast of the building foundation contains 17 buildings, ten
of which were still under constructio In addition, construction activity was
observed at the batch plant midway between the building foundation and the HEN HOUSE
facility.
The base dimensions for the Olenegorsk and Pechora radars are comparable to those for
the building foundation at Sary-Shagan. At Olenegorsk, the phased-array radar is 101 by 49
meters (including the attached control building) and at Pechora the receiver is 115 by 44
meters at the base. The distances between footings for the Olenegorsk radar in the early

(Figure 2), and at Pechora the footings apart along both axes. 2oA-i
Construction of the radars at Olenegorsk and Pechora took approximately two and one-
half years. The similarities in construction of these two radars with the building foundation
at Sary-Shagan would suggest that if the construction activity at Sary-Shagan is for a radar,
it may be completed by early 1979.
