Ching-yu ICBM Test Site Nearly Launch Capable
Following Probable Refurbishment (S)
(TSR) This re port summarizes the recent activity observed at Chin -vu Missile Test
Complex SSM China. The Ching-yu ICBM Test Site is 25X1
the research and development elevate-to-launch test silo for the CSS-3 ICBM. The launcher
assembly has probably been refurbished and the checkout of the launcher appears to be in
progress. The duration of the checkout process cannot be determined, but it should be com-
pleted in time for a summer/fall launch schedule.
(TSRtJ) The most recent launch of a CSS-3 from the Ching-yu Missile Test Complex
SSM occurred This was the fourth launch from the site and the second 25X1
in 1976, the silo launcher was disassembled, 25X1
probably to refurbish it. This was the first time that the silo was observed deactivated.
('I'SIS) The silo launcher assembly had been removed when a portion 25X1
of t he umbilical tower, the missile support ring, and two halves of the service platform were
observed at the site and site support area (Figure 1). This suggested that the launcher
assembly was to be refurbished. The launcher assembly had apparently been refurbished
and reassembled as the individual components were no longer observed 25X1
at the site or site support area.
(TSR) The next step in readying the silo for launch would be the checkout of the
reassembled launcher. Preparations for this appeared to be underway as early 25X1
when the silo checkout fixture and the CSS-3 first- and second-stage transporters 25X1
were o )served in the missile checkout and assembly support area (Ching-yu SSM Support
Facility . The first- and second-stage transporters have been used 25X1
to transport the checkout fixture. When in use, the fixture is probably installed in the silo to
test the launcher assembly and elevator. The silo service crane remained in its winter tie-
down position 25X1
('FSR)~ the service crane had been moved to the southwest side of the apron 25X1
and its boom was in the raised position. A large truck-mounted crane and the silo service
crane were both observed at the test site on the silo apron The silo 25X1
checkout fixture was removed from the checkout and assembly support area 25X1
and had probably been installed in the silo. The truck-mounted crane remained in 25X1
posit ion on the apron indicating that the checkout fixture was probably still in 25X1
the silo. When the checkout of the reassembled launcher assembly is completed and the
checkout fixture removed, the silo will again be ready for missile launching.
