Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/08/18: CIA-RDP78TO5698A000100010080-8 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/08/18: CIA-RDP78T05698A000100010080-8 DISMANTLING OF WESTERN CULTURAL STRUCTURES IN PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA (S) (TSR) Evidence of the dismantling of Western cultural structures by the Khmer Rouge government in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, was seen on imagery The Roman 25X1 Catholic cathedral (Figure 1) adjacent to the Royal Medical Facility and two other Catholic churches-both on National Route 5, one adjacent to and immediately north of Tonle Sap Bridge and the other 1.1 kilometers (km) north of Tonle Sap Bridge-had been completely dismantled. The towers and front had been removed from a Catholic church 1.2 km north of Tonle Sap Bridge on Chruoy Chang War peninsula. (TSR) The cathedral and all the churches were intact when last seen 25X1 seven months after the Khmer Rouge takeover. 25X1 (TSR) Most of the tombstones in the cemeteries associated with these churches and in the French/European cemetery (Figure 2) near the French Embassy have been removed. The French Colonial War Memorial to the Dead and the Khmer Republic monument have also been removed.
