COMMENT: TWO new ICBM silos have recently been identified in China. Both are in an early
stage of construction and the most significant feature is a large rectangular cover (21
to 26 meters long on each side). The cover hides the silo excavation. The new silos,likel
all found thus far in China, are built on the side of a hill. The hillside is terraced
in order to form a level apron for the silo. Most important is the identification of
adits or spoil from caves under construction about 44 meters below the silo apron. About
50 housing buildings and pieces of concrete mixing eaui~ment were seen near each site.
