FIRST IDENTIFICATION OF A RESHEF- (SAAR IV-) CLASS
PATROL BOAT IN SOUTH AFRICA (S)
(S/WNINTEL) An Israeli-designed RESHEF- (SAAR IV-) class patrol boat
was identified for the first time in South Africa at Durban Port Facilities
The vessel was observed alongside a pier
at a small naval facility on Salisbury Island, which is in the middle of
the harbor. One gun was forward and one was aft on the RESHEF; no GABRIEL
missile launchers were present.
(S~ The first RESHEF reportedly arrived in South Africa from 25X1
Israel in October 1977. Two more RESHEFs are to be provided by Israel and
approximately 20 will be constructed in South Africa.*
