THE CANAL EXTENDS NORTH AND SOUTH THROUGH
THE ISTHMUS OF SUEZ (AS SUWAYS), CONNECT-
ING THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA WITH THE GULF
OF SUEZ.
DURING 1966 SHIPS USING THE CANAL CARRIED
237 MILLION TONS OF CARGO WHICH REPRESENTED
APPROXIMATELY 15 PERCENT OF THE WORLDS SEA-
BORNE COMMERCE. APPROXIMATELY 80 PERCENT
OF THE CARGO MOVES NORTH WITH ABOUT FOUR-
FIFTHS OF THIS CARGO ACCOUNTED FOR BY OIL
SHIPMENTS, THE CANAL SHORTENS THE AVERAGE
DELIVERY TIME FOR SOVIET DELIVERIES TO NORTH
VIETNAM FROM 36 TO 20 DAYS AND THE AVERAGE
DELIVERY TIME FOR US GRAIN SHIPMENTS TO
