The Joint Tsunami Research Effort is now attempting the implementation of that program. Lt. Bernard will be on NOAA travel orders and at Novosibirsk, USSR, during the period July 7 -- August 15 for the computation and numerical hydrodynamics of tsunami runup and island-wave interactions at the Computer Center there. Lt. Bernard's work will result in the further cooperation of Drs. Poplovsky, US :, Lutd Miller, USA, sometime during August 1975. They will implement the analytic field experiment of approximately six-weeks' duration; the site will be the Sakalin Complex -- Scientific Research Institute, Attached are copies of the correspondence applicable to this research attempt. Please call me on FTS: (808) 955-0225) is you need any further information. Best regards, Gaylord R. Miller Director, JTRE cc: R. Burns -- RF28 B. Thompson W161~' R. Adm. NOAH Corps Joint Tsunami Research Effort Subject' Planned trip to USSR A5 a result of the US-USSR agreement on Environmental Protection (23 May 1972), the first meeting of experts of the US-USSR on i.egration of tsunami. warning systems was held in Silver Spring, Maryland, on December 2-7, 1974. The results of this meeting led to the implementation of a scientific exchange program during the calendar year 1975. One such exchangc is to he my visit to the Computing Center in Novosibirsk, USSR, to perform computational hydrodynamics of tsunamis interacting with the Kuril Islands. This will be the analytic part of a six-week:-field experiment to be conducted by Drs. Poplovsky, USSR, and Miller, USA, during August 1975. Communications have been established with Dr. Alekseev in Novosibirsk and a program has been run on the BESM-6 computer there. In order to make available my foreign travel plans, I have constructed the following itinerary which includes 1) my six-week scientific exchange program visit in Novosibirsk and, 2) my attendance at the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics Conference (Tsunami Symposium) in Grenoble, France.
