SIGNIFIC,NCE: THIS BRIEFING BOARD DEPICTS ThE USE BY THE NORTH VIETNAMESE OF A DECEPTION TECHNIQUE WI.EREBY AN APPARENTLY UNSERVICEABLE BRIDGE IS MADE SERVICEABLE BY TiIE USE OF CABLES AND REMOVABLE SECTIONS OF BRIDGE DECKING. T1;E SECTIONS OF BRIDGE DECKING ARE PLACED ON CABLES STRUHC ACRU~S THE UNSERVICEABLE PORTION OF THE BRIDGE. THESE SECTIONS ARE REMOVED DURING THE DAY (WHEN PHOTO RECON- iNAISSANCE IS NORMALLY CONDUCTED) , THEREBY RENDERING TILL .,RIDGE UNSERVICEABLE, AND REPLACED ON TiiE CALLES AT NIGHT TO ACCOMMODATE LIGi1T VLIiICULAR TRAFFIC. TIIE XOiNN CA TRANG HIGHihAY BRIDGE OVER THE NAM QUAT (RIVER) IS BEING RECONSTRUCTED iwITH FOUR CABLES STRUNG BETIVEEN THE ABUT'i-iENTS. PORTABLE DECKING IS OBSERVED ON THE APPROACHES. THAT THE PORTABLE SECTIONS OF BRIDGE DECKING ON THE HIGHWAY BRIDGE OVER THE RAO CAI ARE IN PLACE ON THE CABLES, RENDERING THE BRIDGE SERVICEABLE TO LIGHT VEHICULAR TRAFFIC. DECKING UN TTIE iiIGiiluAY BRIDGE OVER T1iE RAO CAI IS ONCE AGAIN REMOVED AND PLACED ATOP THE ADJACENT SOUTHERN SPAN, GIVING THE BRIDGE AN UNSERVICEABLE APPEARANCE. RECONSTRUCTION OF TILE IIIGHIVAY BRIDGE OVER THE NArd QUAT APPEARS TO BE CONTINUING. TO SERVICEABLE AND ONE UNSERVICEABLE FORDS ARE OBSERVED IN THE AREA.
