1. SIGNIFICANCE:
THIS BRIEFING BOARD DEPICTS THE FIRST PHOTOGRAPHIC
GONFIRMATION OF MIG-21 (FISIIBED D MODEL) AIRCRAFT IN NORTH
VIETNAM. IT IS ALSO THE FIRST TIME ANY MODEL OF MIG-21
AIRCRAFT IN NORTH VIETNAM HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED WITH ROCKET
PODS.
2. LOCATION:
TWO MIG-21 (FISiBED D MODEL) AIRCRAFT ARE OBSERVED
IN FLIGHT APPROXIMATELY 3.5 NM NORT:IWES, OF PIIUC YEN
AIRFIELD, NORTH VIETNAM. ONE FISHBED AIRCRAFT LOCATED AT
PHUC YEN AIRFIELD CAN NOT BE IDENTIFIED AS TO MODEL.
3. MISSION READOUT:
PHOTOGRAPHY FROM MISSION BLUE SPRINGS

AIRCRAFT IN FLIGHT 3.5 NM NORTHWEST OF PHUC YEN AIRFIELD.
ONE MIG-21, OBSERVED AT 2116N 10545E, IS ARMED WITH TWO
AA-2 ATOLL (USSR K-13) AIR-TO-AIR MISSILES, AND THE SECOND
MIG-21, OBSERVED AT 21loN 1US41r, IS ARMED WITH AT LEAST

THE STAR AND BAR INSIGNIA IS NOTED ON THE SECOND AIRCRAFT.
DEPICTED ON THE GRAPHIC IS A FISHBED AIRCRAFT AT
PHUC YEN AIRFIELD WIIICHI CAN NOT BE IDENTIFIED AS TO MODEL;
HOWEVER, TILE RIDGE WHICH RUNS ALONG TILE TOP OF THE FUSELAGE
FROM THE CANOPY TO TILE VERTICAL STABILIZER, THE OVERALL
LENGTH, AND THE GREATER DISTANCE BETWEEN THE CANOPY AND
TILE BEGINNING OF THE VERTICAL STABILIZER ARE SOME FEATURES
WHICH DISTINGUISH THIS AIRCRAFT FROM TILE FISHPOT MODEL.
AN ADDITIONAL IDENTIFIABLE FEATURE IS THE MORE PRONOUNCED
BLUNTNESS OF THE FISHBED WINGTIP, OBSERVED ON THIS AIRCRAFT,
WITH A MORE POINTED WINGTIP ON THE FISHPOT.

THE FIRST PHOTOGRAPHIC CONFIRMATION OF FISHBED (MIG-21)
AIRCRAFT IN NORTH VIETNAM WAS OBTAINED ON
PHOTOGRAPHY, AND THE IDENTIFICATION OF PROBABLE AAM'S
ON AIRCRAFT IN NORTH VIETNAM WAS OBTAINED FROM PHOTOGRAPHY OF
TILE FISILBED D, AN Al RADAR EQUIPPED ALL-WEATHER
INTERCEPTER, IS NOW ASSESSED TO HAVE A SECONDARY MISSION OF
