SIGNIFICANCE: THIS BRIEFING BOARD DEPICTS RECENT ACTIVITY AT BAI THUONG AIRFIELD. 2. LOCATION: THE AIRFIELD IS LOCATED ~+.9 NM EAST OF BAI THUONG AND 1.5 NM SOUTH OF HAI TRACH. 3. BACKGROUND: CONSTRUCTION BEGAN ON BAI THLTONG AIRFIELD IN JUNE 1965; HOWEVER, PROGRESS HAS BEEN SLOW, CONTINUING FOR APPROXIMATELY EIGHTEEN MONTHS. THE 8200 X 175 FOOT CONCRETE RUNWAY APPEARS COMPLETE EXCEPT FOR FINAL SURFACING. FIFTY-EIGHT AIRCRAFT REVETMENTS HAVE BEEN BUILT AND PROBABLY TWELVE MORE ARE STILL UNDER CONSTRUCTION. SOME OF THE REVETMENTS ARE AS MUCH AS TWO NM WEST OF THE AIR- FIELD, IN WOODED AREAS AND SMALL VILLAGES. NO SUPPORT-TYPE BUILDINGS OR POL STORAGE FACILITIES HAVE BEEN DETECTED. 4. COLLATERAL: IF COMBAT AIRCRAFT WERE DEPLOYED TO BAI THUONG, IT WOULD BECOME THE SOUTHERN- MOST BASE IN THE NORTH VIETNAMESE AIR DEFENSE SYSTEM. THE BASE IS ASTRIDE THE FLIGHT CORRIDORS OF US AIRCRAFT COMING FROM THAILAND. THE LOCATION ALSO WOULD ENABLE AIRCRAFT BASED THERE TO INTERDICT AIR ATTACKS LAUNCHED AT SEA AGAINST THE THANH HOA-VINH COMPLEX. THE STRIP APPEARS SERVICEABLE AND COULD POSSIBLY ACCOMMODATE JET AIRCRAFT. ALSO OBSERVED ARE ONE HEAVILY CAMOUFLAGED VEHICLE IN AN AIRCRAFT REVETMENT ALONG THE TAXIWAY AT U'Il~I WG502995 AND AN ILS INNER MARKER BEACON SITE OCCUPIED BY AN UNIDENTIFIED VEHICLE AND A PROBABLE SINGLE-AXLE GENERATOR TRAILER AT UTM WH~+75020, APPROXIMATELY 1500 YARDS IN DIRECT LINE WITH THE NORTH- WEST END OF THE RUNWAY. THE REMAINING ILS SITES ARE UNOCCUPIED. THE RUNWAY IS CRATERED AND REMAINS UNSERVICEABLE. ALSO REVEALS A NEWLY IDENTIFIED UNOCCUPIED AW/GCI RADAR FACILITY LOCATED 2.7 NM NORTHEAST OF THE AIRFIELD.
