1. SIGNIFICANCE:
THIS BRIEFING BOARD DEPICTS THE FIRST SIGHTING OF A HUCHWAN HYDRO-
FOIL MOTOR TORPEDO BOAT (PTH) IN NORTH VIETNAM. THE HUCHWAN PTH IS
COMMUNIST CHINA'S FIRST OPERATIONAL HYDROFOIL COMBATANT.
2. LOCATION:
THE PROBABLE HUCHWAN PTH IS LOCATED AT HA TOU BOAT REPAIR FACILITY
CAMOUFLAGED PROBABLE HUCHWAN PIE LOCATED ON A CRADLE WITHIN THE CIRCULAR
TIDAL BASIN AT HA TOU BOAT REPAIR FACILITY (UTM YJ239157).
4. REMARKS:
THE HUCHWAN PTH, CHINA'S FIRST OPERATIONAL HYDROFOIL CONBATANT, HAVE
BEEN OBSERVED UNDER CONSTRUCTION AT THE SHANGHAI SHIPYARD HU-TUNG SINCE
LATE 1963. VESSELS OF THIS CLASS HAVE BEEN DEPLOYED TO OPERATING BASES,
INCLUDING LAN-TIEN MTB BASE, AND HU MEN MTB BASE. TWO PROBABLE HUCHWAN
PEN WERE OBSERVED AT THE LUNG-MEN NAVAL STATION (LOCATED AT THE HEAD OF THE
GULF OF TONKIN) DURING SEPTEMBER 1967.
