SIGNIFICANCE: THIS BRIEFING BOARD DEPICTS A PROBABLE NEW SAM SITE (283) NEAR THE MU GIA PASS. 2. LOCATION: THE SITE IS LOCATED JUST WEST OF ROUTE 15, 23 NM WEST OF KY ANH (UTM WE778977), AND 24 NM NORTH OF THE MU GIA PASS WHICH PASSES THROUGH THE LAOS/NORTH VIETNAM BORDER. 3. REMARKS: THIS SAM SITE IS APPROXIMATELY 22 NM NORTH OF AN AREA ALONG ROUTE 15, THAT HAS BEEN FREQUENTLY STRUCK BY B-52'S. 4. MISSION READOUT: ATTACHMENT TO L-4920 13 MARCH 1968 PAGE 1 UNOCCUPIED, UNREVETTED LAUNCH POSITIONS AND AN UNOCCUPIED PARTIALLY REVETTED GUIDANCE AREA. 5. COLLATERAL: ACCORDING TO A RECENT DEFENSE INTELLIGENCE BULLETIN, SITE 283, IF OCCU- PIED, WOULD EXTEND THE KNOWN SAM ENVELOPE 13 MILES SOUTH OF ITS PRESENT LIMIT. THE SAM SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO BE EFFECTIVE AGAINST MACH 2 TARGETS AT RANGES BETWEEN FIVE AND 22 NAUTICAL MILES (l7 NM RADIUS SHOWN ON GRAPHIC), These notes have been prepared for briefing purposes only and should not be used for detailed analytical work.
