Before the President's visit, the North Vietnamese published generalized press commentaries warning the Chinese and the Soviets by name that the US diplomatic strategy is aimed at dividing socialist countries and resur- recting "obsolete" spheres of influence in the world. They republished some of the commen- taries during the visit, but otherwise Hanoi's out- put was notable riainly for its assiduous effort to avoid any mention at all of the Chinese. Hanoi failed, for instani.e, to publish until 1 March a Chinese statement of support for the Vietnamese Communists that I- ad been issued on 19 February.. The Vietnamese do continue to criticize the US, and Presiden- Nixon personally, in strident terms. To buttress the point, the Hanoi press has announced publication of a book on "Nixon's criminal record," and almost simultaneously has surfaced an editor al portrait of the President that uses unusually abusive language even for the North Vietnamese press. The avoidance of any reference to Peking was undoubtedly meant to convey Hanoi's pique. The regime is almost certainly deeply worried that China's role in the summit may have helped to defuse the war
