NEWARK COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING ALUMNI NEWSLETTER Volume 9 Number 2 October 1974 A NEW YEAR, A NEW NAME: -NEW JERSEY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY" It becomes official January 1, 1975. After extensive reviews, studies, polls--and a contest--the College Trustees have adopted a new comprehensive name. "New Jersey Institute of Technology," the designation which won a prize for alumnus Joseph M. Anderson, '25, has long been the frontrunner in the name change deliberations. NJIT was chosen to reflect the cur- rent broad range of the College's academic offerings. President William Hazell has said, "New Jersey Insti- tute of Technology.., is to be inclusive of Newark College of Engineering and New Jersey School of Architecture, with these names appearing as subheads wherever possible. The name...is most expressive of the current and visible future missions of the institution." AND SOME NEW FACES There's a new look at NCE for 1974-75: a large con- tingent of new students; a brand new School of Archi- tecture, with its design studios temporarily on the fourth floor, Tiernan; and new faculty in a number of departments. A notable addition is Dr. Robert A. Comparin, brought in from VPI as chairman of the Mechanical Engineering Department. And moving up is Dr. Leonard Salzarulo, new chairman of the Physics Department. Dr. Comparin sees as his first major task the modern- ization of the ME instructional laboratories. VOLLEYBALL - BASKETBALL FOR ALUMNI Starting soon Sign up with Oleg Moiseenko, 645-5515 Volleyball: Tuesdays 6-8:30 PM Basketball: Thursdays 7-8:30 PM - LEAGUES Basketball: Tuesday nights - OPEN by Tom Reilly VARSITY ROUTS ALUMNI Although stocked with outstanding play- ers of past seasons, NCE's Alumni soccer team discovered that youth has its mer- its--the grads bowing to the current varsity team, 4-0. The game was the 16th renewal of the alumni-varsity rivalry and 21 graduate lettermen participated. Among the alums were Andy Brown '60 and Andy Handwerker '63, former career scoring record hold- ers. They saw Fabio Hurtado, the current record holder, score 3 goals for the varsity. Oleg Moiseenko '67, assistant coach of the varsity, master-minded the grads. He had Rocco Kruslic and Pat Connell, both '73; Haci Ozbek and Dyric London, both '74; Andy Srodin '66; Lou DeVito '60; Bob Zlotnick '65; Jack Fernandes, Pete Svoboda, and John Rozembersky, all '72; Harry Habermas '70; Imants Kalnins '68; and Gerry Kurth '67 to choose from. Traveling the greatest distance was Tony Baeta '69, who is currently studying medicine at the University of Lisbon, Portugal. While the game was strictly for fun, it did indicate that the Red & White will field a strong team this year. Led by three-time All-American Fabio Hurtado and defensive standout Joe Griffin, the Highlanders meet 13 foes beginning Sep- tember 21. Coach Mal Simon is seeking a repeat of last year's appearance in the NAIA nationals. SOCIAL COMPETENCE PROGRAM Enrollments are rushing in for our Social Competence Program. Alumni President Warren Bergmann distributed almost 700 brochures to the freshman class on September 17. Upper classmen are signing up for speed reading, art of conversation, and horseback riding in large numbers, too. New this year is "Creative Photography," to be taught by NCE's new Director of Special Projects, Allan Reider, a professional photographer. The Phys. Ed. Department is handling enrollments in tennis; beginning skiing on the Ski-Dek; and small boat handling and sailing on the Sunfish. Classes start October 9.
