SUBJECT: Survey of Intelligence on Communism from 1 August 1948
1, In accordance with the decision of the Committee
on the meeting of 25 August that an agency-wide canvas of intelligence
projects on Communism be undertaken -- finished, in process or planned --
I an submitting herewith a number of forms which are designed to give the
Secretary and the sub-committee the necessary information ands, at the
same time, to serve as the Committee's permatient project card file.
2n Inasmuch an the Interim Committee received a project
status report from the participating agencies covering the time through
July 1948? the now card file should begin with l August i948. It Is
suggested that short articles or docurraants of minor importance be omitted
and only such projeete noted (each on an individual card) which, in the
opinion of the respective agonciee, are of sufficient importance to be con-
sidered by the programming sub-committee.
The Secretary recommends that the canvassing project not
be limited to the time between 1 August 1948 and 1 September 1949 but that,
beginning 1 October 1949, the members of the Committee submit monthly reports
on projects completed or planned so that the card file be kept up-to-date
4. Suggestions for future improvement of the forms will
receive every consideration by the Secretary.
5.., Since the date of the next full Committee meeting depends
upon the completion of the survey and the organization of the material by
the sub-committee, it is requested that the information be furnished as soon
as possible.
