SUBJECT: Request for National Intelligence Estimate
The Acting Assistant Secretary for Far Eastern Affairs has
asked me to transmit his request for a national intelligence
estimate of the consequences for the security of the United States
that would result from Communist domination of any one or more of
the following areas: Taiwan, Hainan, Indochina, Thailand, Burma
and Malaya. In preparing this estimate, it is desired that account
be taken of the major possible variations as to the timing and
means of achievement of Communist domination over the areas in
question.
The requestor has suggested May 15 as a reasonable deadline
for"completion of this estimate. I will appreciate hearing from
you at your earliest convenience on the feasibility of this deadline
from the point of view of CIA and the other IAC agencies. For its
part, 0IR believes that this request deserves a very high priority
and will give full support to any attempt to honor the suggested
deadline.
