Approved For Release 1999/09 48 -_ aX79-010964000400010002-9 qM0 MO FOR TUE CARTO APUY DIVISION Month of March 1955 A. Ac lisbmments During March the Cartography Division completed a total of 80 maps and charts which represents the highest single monthly production for two years. Of the total, 63 were in support of CIA, 2 for USAF, and 15 for the De nt of State. The Office of Research and Reports accounted for 29 of the total and were primarily in support of the Economic Area production. A series of 7 rather complex charts were completed for OSI and 4 maps for ONE. A crash project involving 3 maps on Indonesia was most noteworthy in the Division in its contribution to the. Office of National Estimates. The NIS Chapter I map for Poland was completed during March as well as aseri s of 15 maps in support of DD/P via DJGG. Production for the Department State increased during the month and included several maps for its contribu- tion to the HIS program as well as special subject maps in support of other State Department, production. Particularly noteworthy was a high priority project for the Egypt and Anglo-Egyptian Sudan Affairs Office of the Department of State involving preparation of 128 Top Secret hand-colored saps which required ap- p tely 160 manhours of which 43 were on an overtime basis. The co- ordination on this particular project was most satisfying and effective and it should be noted that it was apparently well received in the Department of State. The Special Support Branch completed 27 items of work and accepted requests for 57. Production in this Branch for CM increased relative too be their total work-load. The Office of Scientific Intelligence: the other primary user of the cartographic production of this Branch. During March the Division acceptred, requests for 47 new projects, 38 from CIA, 1 from the U. S. Air Force, and 8 from the Department of State. The pattern of requests remained normal with the heaviest requests coming from CO. Two ad-, ditional NIS Chapter I maps were initiated, Yugoslavia and India. As reported previously, these maps represent sizeable blocks of mss constitute 22 major production items. At the close of the reporting peri , maimed. In reproduction, a decrease over the previous month. S. Coordination The Records Management Survey team submitted its conclusions to the Division which resulted in a desirable review of the records currently main- tained in D/GC. it is felt that this survey was very successful and effective and that the Survey team should be complimented on their effectiveness. Tech- nical problems involved in the color separation of the USSR at a scale of 1:2,500,000 were discussed during the month with the reproduction plant and several problems resolved. sift Approved For Release 1999/09/08: CIA-RDP79-01096A0004`0 Approved For Relea 1999/09/0? X 1 79-0109& 00400010002-9 C. Problems fte p problem in the Cartography Division continues to be the lack of capability in the Cart :aphic Aid Section of the Development and Construction Branch. Although an additional person has been temporarily as- signed to the Section, the work-load continues to ruin beyond the prabao- tive c pabilityr of the Section. The p: xcttion for NIS Chapter I involves alnst the entire man-hours of 2 of tb > persons assigned to the Section. Additional transfers from the Drafting Section appear to be the logical solution to the problem. D. Other Several transfers of personnel in the Clrtograpby Division should be noted. transferrd from the Ca 'tograpl y Division to the DD/P. trensf from the Faro n.-Arica, Cod pilation Branch to Assistant Chief,, Far East Compilation Dr nch, and transferred from the Carto- graphic Aid Section to the Par East Compilation Branch. In the case of this represents an example of the promotional and career develop- men procedure as practiced by the Division. Having completed the college requirements, - et this tide transfers to a professional position in the Division. iiNU?D^ _ Approved For Release 1999/09/08 : CIA-RDP79-01096A000400010002-9 A.
