'II. PROGRESS OF THE GEOGRAPHY DIVISION
A. Accomplishments
1. Reports
One extremely sensitive report on selected areas in the Far
East, CIA/RR..GR-75, was completed and forwarded to RQM/OIS in answer to
their Case K-1853 dated 17 January 1955. CIA/RR-ER-7, A List of Refer-
ences to Soviet Photo mmetric Literature, was sent out on e
s on, only 5- copies having been reproduced. This Research kid
went to interested components of the Army, Navy, and Air Force and one
copy to the Coast and Geodetic Survey. NIS 21, Yugoslavia, Section 19,
Chapter I. was forwarded to the Basic Intelligence Division to meet its
scheduled deadline. Another of the USAF Evasion and Escape Manuals,
that for Poland, was reviewed and comments forwarded in memorandum
G/E-17. Two Top Secret memoranda to the USAF commented on Evasion
Routes in the USSR and Bulgaria and Rumania, G/E-18 and 19. Summary of
US Capabilities in Geodetic Positioning with respect to the USSR, GA-1O7,
by the Staff on Soviet Mapping Intelligence, and G/I-119 on Potential
Guided Missile Ranges in the USSR, by the USSR Branch, were prepared for
OSI. 0/I-111, 112, and 113 answered requests from D/A/RR for geographic
background on limitations to the economy of the Soviet Bloc, for revision
of RR/PR-74. Eleven contributions to the OCI Handbook Series went for-
ward.
Four reports are in Reproduction: MR-44; Evasion Geography of
France; Evasion Geography of Norway; and SAW. A the end o the month
wwo jor studies are in the final stages of preparation before going to
Reproduction, The European Borders of the USSR and Chukotsk Peninsula,
CIA/RR-G-12 and CIA/RK-0-15 respectively.
Other reports that are nearing the publication stage are the
evasion geographies on Tibet, Syria-Lebanon, and Peninsular India,
which will be ready for editing early in April. NIS 35-36, India
Pakistan, Chapter IX, was submitted for contributor review and will be
ready for D/B during April. NIS 14, Poland, Chapter IX, has been
edited and currently is being reviewed by the analyst. The balance of
the German/Polish report in process in the Eastern Europe Branch will
be completed, it is hoped, in April or May. The Geographic Briefs of
the Soviet Economic Regions (contributions to D/A/RR Project 10.13-1),
our CIA/RR-GR-70, is being assembled by the Capabilities Branch for
Joint publication by them and our USSR Branch.
2. Project Planning
Self-initiated projects received considerable attention
during the month, and the USSR Branch has started work to survey and
analyze materials on cultural and physical geography of islands of the

The change in emphasise in the escape and evasion program
and the role the Geography Division 411 assume were the subjects of
several meetings- with Air Force personnel, "(a) Exploitation Branch,
AFOIN, personnel met with the Division Chief to consider the changes
in the "C" Area outline they are proposing, priorities being set for
some forty areas, and the assumption of executive functions by the
Geography Division. Effects of these proposals on the Air Universityas
program would include cancellation of their contract work and submission
of their manuscripts to the Geography Division for review, editing and
publication. (b) The Division Chief attended a meeting with Colonel
Cook and Major Stonwier, SAC, Colonel Hollins, ARS, and three members of
AFOIN 2AA3 at which (1) SAC was asked to scratch its request for "B"
Area studies and to let the Geography Division prepare munch smaller
reports for includion in ARS9 Rescue Folder and (2) to get part of A1)TIC9s load in evasion geographies. i to assume
(a) The Division Chief
and Chief of the USSR Branch attended a briefing by the Air Force for
