PROGRESS OF THE GEOGRAPHY DIVISION A. Accomplishments 1. Reports One extremely sensitive report on selected areas in the Far East, CIA/RR..GR-75, was completed and forwarded to RQM/OIS in answer to their Case K-1853 dated 17 January 1955. CIA/RR-ER-7, A List of Refer- ences to Soviet Photo mmetric Literature, was sent out on e s on, only 5- copies having been reproduced. This Research kid went to interested components of the Army, Navy, and Air Force and one copy to the Coast and Geodetic Survey. NIS 21, Yugoslavia, Section 19, Chapter I. was forwarded to the Basic Intelligence Division to meet its scheduled deadline. Another of the USAF Evasion and Escape Manuals, that for Poland, was reviewed and comments forwarded in memorandum G/E-17. Two Top Secret memoranda to the USAF commented on Evasion Routes in the USSR and Bulgaria and Rumania, G/E-18 and 19. Summary of US Capabilities in Geodetic Positioning with respect to the USSR, GA-1O7, by the Staff on Soviet Mapping Intelligence, and G/I-119 on Potential Guided Missile Ranges in the USSR, by the USSR Branch, were prepared for OSI. 0/I-111, 112, and 113 answered requests from D/A/RR for geographic background on limitations to the economy of the Soviet Bloc, for revision of RR/PR-74. Eleven contributions to the OCI Handbook Series went for- ward. Four reports are in Reproduction: MR-44; Evasion Geography of France; Evasion Geography of Norway; and SAW. A the end o the month wwo jor studies are in the final stages of preparation before going to Reproduction, The European Borders of the USSR and Chukotsk Peninsula, CIA/RR-G-12 and CIA/RK-0-15 respectively. Other reports that are nearing the publication stage are the evasion geographies on Tibet, Syria-Lebanon, and Peninsular India, which will be ready for editing early in April. NIS 35-36, India Pakistan, Chapter IX, was submitted for contributor review and will be ready for D/B during April. NIS 14, Poland, Chapter IX, has been edited and currently is being reviewed by the analyst. The balance of the German/Polish report in process in the Eastern Europe Branch will be completed, it is hoped, in April or May. The Geographic Briefs of the Soviet Economic Regions (contributions to D/A/RR Project 10.13-1), our CIA/RR-GR-70, is being assembled by the Capabilities Branch for Joint publication by them and our USSR Branch. 2. New projects for the revised escape and evasion "C" Area Studies will be initiated following the final decision as regards the outline and when other details are worked out. 3. Other 2 5X 1 A --V ,. The change in emphasise in the escape and evasion program and the role the Geography Division 411 assume were the subjects of several meetings- with Air Force personnel, "(a) Exploitation Branch, AFOIN, personnel met with the Division Chief to consider the changes in the "C" Area outline they are proposing, priorities being set for some forty areas, and the assumption of executive functions by the Geography Division. Effects of these proposals on the Air Universityas program would include cancellation of their contract work and submission of their manuscripts to the Geography Division for review, editing and publication. (b) The Division Chief attended a meeting with Colonel Cook and Major Stonwier, SAC, Colonel Hollins, ARS, and three members of AFOIN 2AA3 at which (1) SAC was asked to scratch its request for "B" Area studies and to let the Geography Division prepare munch smaller reports for includion in ARS9 Rescue Folder and (2) to get part of A1)TIC9s load in evasion geographies. i to assume (a) The Division Chief and Chief of the USSR Branch attended a briefing by the Air Force for the DD/P Area on current escape and evasion concepts.
