Re s Dearing February, Geography Division effort resulted in the issuance of 19 intelligence reports and memoranda. The fourth index to the Geographic (or Map) Intelligence nc Review was issued in final form covering the seven Secret issues from Ne 51 through September 1953? Soviet Education in Modes and Carto CIA/RR ER-ll is the ninth *RRM research 25X 1 A5a 1 in genre st resulting from the Qon t to be published. The first portion of The Polish-Germ Border Area (Part I introduction, Part II, Climate of the 1 sh-Oermsn border area, and Part 25X1 A III0 Area A), CIA/RR-GR-71, was completed and forwarded the month, and three more areas will be covered in a second portion to be completed in the near future. In addition to answering the request, it is expected this report will be forwarded at a somewhat later date to25X1 A the Air Force in partial answer to its 30 September 1954 Top Secret request for 18 border studies. Evasion Geogmphy of Southeast China for Combat Crew Briefing, CIA/RR-OR- , Was el 'treat' to the r orce Lt. o . Smith and Major 2fosscrop) on 10 February. This major job, which was a specialized, "boiled dove' evasion study, was completed in two weeks, to the satisfaction of the Air Force. On their instruction, we are closing out Project No. 61.1304, Evasion Geography of south China, inasmuch as the above mentioned study superseded their earlier request. North China Target Study', CIA/RR-OR-73, completed during February, We the seen report be for- 25X1 Ar rde.d in answer use K-11770, dated 22 December 1953. Section 19 of Chapter I, NIS , Thailand, met its February deadline. The USSR Branch answered a request from 25X1 X7 on the operation of Soviet Hydro-electric Power Stations, 0-- transmitted the information to. SA./RR. tl/E-16 gave the Division's comments following the Western Europe Branch's revieV of the USAF Evasion and Escape Manual on Finland, the third such manual reviewed in the Division. In addition to the seven contributions to the OCI Handbook Series -- G 1-94, Sweden; GE/I-957 British Guiana; 0/1-97, Si; uan0/1-98, Afghanistan- 011-3.00, Brazil, 0/1-101, Tunisia; and 6/I-102, The Belgian Congo -- four other memoranda in answer to internal requests were prepared. These included: 0/1-92 on the Organization of "Autonomous" Goveeraents in Communist China and Recent Related Developments, which is in fact a supplement to CIA -G-7 dated Julf 1953. The USSR Branch ~areed a memorandum for. the SA/ in reply to a cable request from to supply information on 25X6A reported railroad construction extending beyond Aleksandrov Gay, 0/I-99, and another that answered TS8/ID's request to check Soviet administrative 25X1 Aga divisions used in ous code studies on Soviet passport letter prefixes, etc., 0/1-96. prepared a contribution for the OCI Intelligence Weekly Summary,, on the Second Geodetic Conference of the USSR and Satellites. Three reports are in Reproduction: MR-44;; Evasion Geography of France; and ER-7, A List of References on Soviet Photograemetric Literature. -5- Sanitized - Approved For Release : CIA-RDP79-01(96 Eft '!R Mr - Sanitized - Approvl For Release : CIA-RDP79-01(1A000400010008-3 S-E-C-'R-E T . Project Planning The Handbook Coordinator, Presentations Division, OCI forwarded a new request covering 22 countries, for contributions from the Geography Division. This is to be the final request and the list is to be completed by 25 June 55. Considerable time was spent by the Division and. Branch Chiefs in planning material for forthcoming issues of the )R. All contributions to MR-45 we due for editing and review by the 15 'of March, and during the next month project initiations will be submitted on the next two or three issues 3. Other 25X1A9a and other responsible people in D/A and with representatives of St /ft on the issu- ance of a joint 'Econcic. ography'report on the economic regions of the L3SR, ORRlo.43-1 and OIA/RR-GR-70. The economists proposed that the geographic contribution should not be relegated to the status of a supplement., in view of its size and scope, but should be considered an equal part of the study. The second Escape and Evasion Orientation and Exerciser was held 2, 3,. and' 5 February. Those attending felt it arse extremely well organized,'and a most profitable four days of instruction and demon- stration were spent in the lectures here and in the field.later. In addition,, a member of the Division who attended the earlier exercise searched the files and obtained much useful information; a large number of documents were thermofaxed, several others were typed, and a large number of references were obtained. The Training group was most cooperative. Mw Editor-in-Chief attended several meetings called.to discuss methods of documenting reports to be given in cv /CD/17, Now to Document Intelli enceRe rrtss to be issued in the now future. d-w scussions of methods of documenting reports raises.several problems. Much of the material in D/GG reports cannot be documented by source and page since it- requires wide reading in combination with map analysis. If only a relatively few sources are specifically cited, a false impression is given of the amount of research involved. For this reason it may be necessary to use a supplementary list of references that are not specif- ically cited in the report. A mennora-ndum on the subject of Evasion Currency and Barter Items for Combat Crews for the USSR g Bulgaria and Rumania vent in partial 25X1 A reply to their Case X-19280 Actually, this subject is beyond the scope and responsibility of the Geography Division, and the requester has been w rnesd that very little information on other countries may be forthcoming. -6- Sanitized - Approved For Rele,,GAMAM4DP79-01096A000400010008-3 Sanitized - Approved ForFIs~%.,~CIA-RDP79-01fi6A000400010008-3 25X1 A9a Branch, spent a day and a half 25X1 A6a at briefing visiting members of the Alaska Air Cond on the Chukotak area. They had just completed a regional study of this area and were invited to participate by O/TR. 25X1 A5a 1 was the only Consultant employed by the Staff on Soviet Mapping ana intelligence during the month. Be is currentl3 engaged in a review of Molodenakiy'a basic study on geodetic ed to be n l i a n ng p gravinetry. The translation with caveats 3.s be Issued as a report. This will require additional time by 25X1 A5a 1 after completes his work. B. Coordination 25X1A9a The Far East Branch reports: Excellent cooperation was received from TSS/ID in its work on the Chin. evasion study completed during the month. They went through their files and produced a very helpful brief sexmmary of specialized information available to them. 25X1 A9a met with Major Mosscrop and. Major Christopher of the Air Force to discuss the latter's request for border studies and the relationship of these studies to the evasion and escape program. It is Major Mosscrop' as hope that the border information eventually will be incorporated as an appendix to the "C" Area evasion geographies and that portions of the appendix can be detached and replaced by new material from time to time. If it had not been for valiant assistance from the front office 'they would have spent ern more time :at this sort of work. This "flap" was due in part to short- handedness both in the front office and the Branch because of the participation in the E and E course, and to the tightness of the deadline. More fundsmentally., however, it was due to the continuing shortage of clerical personnel. I recomond that rend efforts be made to increase the allotment of clerical slots to this Division. The more fact that the present low ratio of clerical to professional personnel is abhowed by tie-honored precedent dating back to CSg days should' not be any ar nt-for continuing a mistake that was started then. Receipt of infortion concerning international conferences sponsored by the Ii has not been all that might be desired. As a specific case in point, information concerning the WAYS k con- ference on preparation of a regional geological map of Asia and the For Bast has been deficient and slow in coming. In addition to interest on 25X1 A9a the part of the Far East Branch, is also concerned because of the presence of Soviet representatives at the conference. (The Department of State's List of International Conferences and Meetings, dated October 1, 1954, was received in the Division 14 February 55+) On several occasions during the month documents were received on routing from which pages had been clipped by individuals in other parts 25X1A9a of ORR waho bad been ahead on the routing. reeconmanda that this be called to the attention of the appropriate persons in the AD's office and that the matter be taken up at the next meeting of i>RR Division Chiefs. -8- Sanitized - Approved For [tDP79-01 Sanitized - Approval For Release : CIA-RDP79-01 O 000400010008-3 Receipt of IS Chapter IX phic material from Aeronautical.
