As you know, the schedule of JANIS projects
recently sent us presented the Branch with a very
difficult problem. In view of many important commit-
ments it hardly seemed possible that we could meet
the deadlines there set down. On the other hand
Branch authorities, the Deputy Director, Intelligence,
and the Director of Strategic Services all felt that
it was of the utmost importance that we should not
fail to make contributions which we are competent to
make in this important work.
We have therefore gone over the work program
of the Divisions concerned and the personnel situation
with great care. We have curtailed., postponed or
dropped entirely a .number of projects of.considerable
importance, and we have recalled a number of personnel
from outposts overseas to assist in the work. On the
basis of these actions we now definitely plan to pro-
duce our sections of the JANIS volumes called for
according to the schedule presented to us.
I wish you would report these plans to the
