SUBJECT: Initiation of policy for correction and revision of
I S maps submitted for remaining JANIS Studies.
1. It is requested that the following policy be initiated re
all maps prepared by the Engineer Research Section, Army Map Service,
for incorporation in remaining JAINIS Studies,
2, At present it is understood by the &gineer Research
Section that their responsibility as contributor ends with submission
of material to this office. For reasons listed below, it is felt that
this responsibility should be extended to cover revision and correction
of the maps as well,
a. The type styles and symbols used by Army Nap Service
are not readily available.to this office. Corrections on
originals, therefore, cannot be made here without formal
type-order requests to that agency. For the most part,
corrections are too minor to warrant such type-orders,
b. As final reproduction of A%S maps is frequently
handled by that agency rather than GPO (depending on map
sizes and GPO work load), it is scarcely feasible to
transport bullZr original material back and forth between
offices,
3. To avoid a delay in the publication of the remaining JAMS
chapters due to graphic prog
cw~ ress, it will be necessary to obtain
priority for this ,,ork as it is assigned by the Engineer Research
Section to the Cartography Division, AIMS,

JAIuIS 71, Chapters VII and VIII - 12 maps,
correction and revision already in
progress at AIMS.
JAMS 40, Chapters VII and VIII - not yet

5. The above problem has not arisen in the past as the
State Department I-ap Branch formerly handled preparation of these
Paps and the responsibility for correction and revision was
assumed by them without question.
