Enclosed are two name lists: one,a partial coverage of Yugoslavian
names sent to us, and the other, a supplemental list of Bulgarian n? s.
The list of Bulgarian names in the area covered by

maps will be sent to you tomorrow, Saturday, August 27s t.
On the Bulgarian list included in this envelope, we have indicated
the names on the Balkan Series, scale 1:250,000, and
have also given t e Boar s recommended name where it differs from the
name on the Balkan maps. The, third column gives the English generic term,
and the fourth, the Bulgarian generics. In the case of reka (river), and
rokhod (pass), the generics will precede the proper name, while zaliv
bay and Janina (mountain) follow the proper name. Our recommended
names are written with the. understanding that the Bulgarian, generic is
to be used. Tha iI n..,,_.._ ____

low this procedure except
in a few cases. '
On the Yugoslavian list we have chosen a name in every case and
have indicated the few place names found on the Balkan 1:250,000 series.
As in the case of the Bulgarian places, our recommended names are written
with the idea of using Yugoslavian generics.
This does not mean that we go on record as favoring the use of native
generics in the JANIS studies, but we do think that when-native generics
are used with proper names, there will be less confusion and duplication
of generics.
Sincerely yours,
