.Approved For Release 1999/0, 79-01153A00010001 LL ~. ~ 22 January 1969 SUBJECT: Meeting of the Automap Data Bank Study Group - 22 January 1869 1. The second session of the Study Group took place on 22 Jan- uary 1969 with the same audience that attended the first meeting. The subjects considered were planned developments and retrieval. 2. Planned development in cartographic automation is divided in- to two stages. The first stage involves the use of a remote terminal connected to the time sharing computer. Advantages include immediate feedback on inputs, reduced input and operation time, and operating experience in a remote environment. Required would be the conversion of CAM, optimizing the small-scale map, and initial retrieval tech- niques far the page-size data bank. Discussion centered on the serv- icing of plot tapes and queuing problems. The next stage would be the development of CRT capability. First the remote input techniques would be converted to the CRT so each plot file could be visually in- spected on the console screen. Subsequently, operations such as scal- ing, fxaming, deletion or addition, line and symbol alterations, area delineation and identification, and typography would be explored. ~ Capturing the display image is another fertile field for investigation. 3. The retxieva,l topic was introduced by a panel of three CD BGI branch chiefs discussing the initial processes in map design. 25X1A9a 25X1A9a - dealt with the steps encountered in a pra~ection type map. ose frame, scale, map elements, and plate separation wexe covered. 25X1A9a related the steps critical to base mapping such as the map elements and research required. The complexities of plate separation 25X1 Aga -were emphasized. -introduced the factor of ti.zne available. This constraint was related to current intelligence requirements for thematic maps. ~+. The next meeting wi11 be in Room 1E-80 at 0900, Wednesday, 29 January. Background discussions will cover our retrieval experience with - and data organization and storage. 25X6A 25X1A9a ~ r EXEta~av ff~a:n ~+;fa,ratic dav~nrt.~SLi^, ar.9 Approved For Release 1999/0 -01153A00010
