1. A survey of vision operation oonduoted an part of the
CraOhies Register wit.tl transferred te the Map Bramah. ORS, has been
undertaken by approgriste officers of the lisp Branch in cooperation with
the Chief of the Graphies Ragister and the Chief of the Machine Methods
Branek, ocn. It wns found that the Map Division operation oonsisted of
the following:

as a step toard the ultimate goal of coditytng all naps available to
the ?averment that are of intelligenoe value. At the seas times the
operation is planned to meet current needs insofar as possible without
detresting from the attaincornt of the stated goal. To a000mplish this
Anal elkpretive the adhedule of work will be shifted from oeversge of
catalogued hol:iings of each Government agency successively to an area
?overage within the major map holdings (both catalogued and uncetelogued)
of the several Government mopping agencies. The sequence of area cover-
age will be determined by the area priority listing sot up for oantri-
butors to the nip and chart appraisal chapter of the USD At the same
time, all maps of value currently accessioned by Government map emotes,
including those aeoessioned by C/A and obtained through the foroiga asp
proeuroment program and through SO and 00, will be concurrently codified.
So When the codifying for a ermine EIS area is oonsidered sub-
stantially *amplest, as of a given date, tear-sheet listings will be repro-
dusted in smill qoantities for use by contributors to the amp and chart
appraisal Chapters of the EIS. Listings will be arranged under suitable
categories. These sill be of special 'insistence to the Board on Geo-
graphic, lames in undertaking its aommitmenikto the EIS program.

4. All requests for geographic information and map intelligence
mill be handled by appropriate desks within the Branch as part of their
presently established routine responsibilities
So The following organisation is recommended for conducting
initial progrene
a. Betablishment at tbe Special Cataloguing end Codling Units
Proesseing Section, Bap Library Divisions Bhp Branehs with the
Chief of the Processing Section responsible for the programming of
ebs !olive work under the direction of the Chief of the Division*
bo Establishment of the position of Supervisor of the Special
Cataloguing and Coding Unit (p-s) with responsibility for carrying
out en established programs for canduatiag the operation of the
Section and for recommending improvements in programming end opera-
tions.
eo A professional staff of three map cataloguers (PLO to
oatalegue, by the check-card system, uneatalogued maps dealing with
specific, priority areas held by the several Government agenoies ead
to verify previously catalogued maps for these areas prior to trans
mittal to coders for codifying. (This operfttion requires professional
training and does not confliet with the work assigned to other nap
cataloguers in the Processing Section who are responsible for pros-
ceasing currtot acmessions and backlog held in the CIA collection.)
