A CHRONOLOGY OF SIGNIFICANT INTERNATIONAL TERRORIST ACTS

1 March 1973 Khartoum, Sudan Eight Black September Organiza-
tion terrorists seized the Saudi
Arabian Embassy as guests were
departing from a reception. They
held the new U.S. Ambassador to
the Sudan and the departing Deputy
Chief of Mission, the Belgian
Charge, a Jordanian Charge and
the Saudi Arabian Ambassador as
hostages. The U.S. Ambassador,
the Deputy Chief of Mission and
the Belgian Charge were assassi-
nated the following day. (See

1 March 1973 Oslo, Norway Norwegian police informed the
duty officer at the U.S. Embassy
that they had just received a
telephone call stating that a
bomb was set to explode at 0415
hours in the chancery. An imme-
diate search of the interior of
the chancery by the guards and

return of the bodies of two
Pakistani youths shot to death
by police during a raid on the
Indian High Commission in London.
More than 1,000 students paraded
through the streets with the
coffins, shouting, "Down with

4 March 1973 Beirut, Lebanon The Greek charter ship "Sounion,"
carrying 250 American tourists
bound for Haifa, Israel, sank
in Beirut harbor following an
explosion on board. There were
no casualties, but two passen-
gers were temporarily hospital-
ized from smoke inhalation. The
Captain and crew members thought
the explosion could have been
caused by a bomb planted on the
outside of the ship. However,
a spokesman for the New York
travel agency said it was caused
by a faulty boiler. (UNCLASSIFIED)

Investigation of Attempted Bombing of Israeli
Installations-in New York City
On 15 March 1973 the Federal Bureau of
Investigation (FBI) issued a warrant for the
arrest of Khalid Dahham Al-Jawari for planting
the bomb found near the El Al warehouse facil-
ity in Queens in New York City on 6 March 1973.
Al-Jawari, who was described as a well-dressed,
highly educated man, is an Iraqi citizen, and
entered the United States on 12 January 1973,
just five days after the itinerary for Israeli
Prime Minister Golda Meir's visit to the United
States was announced from Jerusalem. (See the

details on the three bombs found in New York
City.)
Al-Jawari departed his room in the May-
flower Hotel in Jersey City on 4 March, and left
behind a number of latent fingerprints plus some
leftover plastic explosives and two batteries.
According to the FBI, fingerprints found in the
car containing the explosives at Kennedy Airport
were identical with those found in Al-Jawari's
room at the Mayflower. Along with the explosives,
literature referring to the Black September Organi-
zation (BSO) also was found in the car.
FBI investigations have revealed that Al-
Jawari, who was allegedly working with the BSO,
has fled the United States. Attempts to locate
him abroad are continuing.
A further study of the bombs used by the
terrorists has revealed that they were set to
explode at noon on 4 March 1973, which coin-
cided with the arrival of Golda Meir in New

York. A test detonation of one of the bombs
produced a fireball approximately 25 feet in
diameter, which rose to a height of 50 to 75
feet. Experts state that if the bombs had
exploded in the trunks of the cars, the magni-
tude of the explosion would have been much
greater. They further stated that anyone
within 100 yards of the blast would have been

Two Suspect Arab Terrorists Arrested in
Northern Italy
Two Jordanians, described as former mem-
bers of the Palestine Liberation Organization,
.were arrested 14 March in Como, a resort town
north of Milan. One of them left a suitcase
at Milan's main railway station which reportedly
contained detailed pictures of Milan airport,
the El Al office in Milan, and the main Milan
rail station itself. The car in which they were
arrested is said to have been stolen and they
have been charged with the theft. The Italian
press has linked the men with the Black September
Organization, but there is as yet no confirmation
